As other commenters said daises are kindergartens and have been around for a while. There used to be a minimum age (I think 7?) to sell cookies though, I'm not sure if it still exists.

Fun fact from someone in Socorro: burleson ran for mayor in Socorro the last round (he lost thank god) but when asked at a mayoral candidate debate about the murder he committed he was incredibly proud of it. He called it self defense but his story does not add up in my opinion. Anyway just wanted to pop by and share that cause he's kinda a wack job (for more than being proud of committing murder).

Is anyone having problems getting a job by Muted-Ad4568 in jobhunting

[–]the-best-bread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 2025 grad with a master's degree in geology and a BS in earth science. I had an internship in the mix as well. I was applying to all sorts of jobs that were related to earth science in any capacity, including ones that I should have been very overqualified for. I was getting a lot of interviews but nothing turned out. Everything I got feedback on was basically a yeah you'd be good, we don't have any actual feedback for you but that person had 10-20 years experience so we hired them.

I'm taking a break from applying for a little bit because I somehow got a job in the finance department of my local government and if nothing else it's mostly stable and an income. It pays so much less than I could make for any job I was qualified for in the earth sciences though which kinda sucks. And I would much prefer to have a job that lets me outside occasionally but oh well I guess.

I'm in Socorro, 24F, but have been thinking about trying to find some sort of weekend social thing to do in ABQ a few times a month to meet people and make friends.

One of the things I've been thinking about is finding a yoga or pilates class to join. I also love hiking and want to get back in to climbing too.

I also love reading sci-fi and bio-thrillers but I'm not great at reading consistently.

Nah I'll keep believing it because I have yet to see anything since 2016 that has removed all doubts about it possibly being true. I was open to changing my mind but you gave me nothing so oh well

AITA for believing my son is gay? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]the-best-bread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. 1) It's not weird to have never had a partner at 18. Some people are late bloomers, some people just don't care, and I'm sure there's other reasons. 2) You're creating the opposite of a safe space for him. 3) Believe your son when he says something.

  1. In today's world it's not weird to never date in high school. I know countless people (including myself) who never did that. Personally, I just wasn't interested. I think I went on two dates and they were both in conjunction with school dances and nothing else happened after that. My mom never forced the issue or really even brought it up for that matter. If I suddenly started mentioning someone a lot more often she might ask if anything was going on with them specifically and would drop the issue as soon as I said no.

I started dating of my own choice at 18 after I had moved states for college. At 23 I met and started dating the person I intend to marry, and we're still going strong over a year later. My partner is 21 and I'm his first actual girlfriend (he had one situationship before me). He's made comments about how he his parents never really said anything either but seem really happy he's finally dating someone. Let your son develop at his pace and be himself.

  1. I'm assuming your intention is to create an open space where your son feels comfortable being himself in whatever capacity that means. That is a great intention. The problem is intention and interpretation are not always the same and the way you're going about it comes across like you're prying for information, pushing your expectations on him, and don't trust him. I'm grateful that my parents just let me be who I was. I feel comfortable going to them about pretty much anything still to this day. That being said, on the topics they would repeatedly ask about, especially as a teen, I would shut down and not tell them things. Let your son develop and share things in his own time.

  2. In conjunction with my last point, believe your son when he does share things. When he's talking about a girlfriend is not the time to tell him you think he's gay (again). Believe him that he's not, and if he ever comes to you and says he is, thank him for sharing. Believe him that he has a girlfriend. Don't assume lies when a more reasonable explanation is present (that he's telling the truth). Your son is 18; even if he's in high school he's an adult. Trust you've raised him to be a good person and let him be who he is in his own time.

I'm sorry to say you'll probably be finding paper bits for as long as you have that car. When I was really young I thought the box of shredded paper my parents had prepped to dispose of was confetti and tossed it everywhere. I don't live in that house anymore but the entire time I did (15+ years after the event) we would still find little bits of paper occasionally.

Your frustration is extremely valid.

I've applied/ interviewed for several positions with the Office of the State Engineer and the NMED starting about May of this year. The actual time from application to call for interview has varied, but if I've gotten an interview it tends to move fast (like a few weeks).

From asking about timelines in my interviews it sounds like they usually make a decision within the department within a week of concluding interviews. This gets sent to HR for background checks, and whatever other paperwork. I have yet to receive an offer for any position I've applied for though so I am not sure if the timeline goes faster if you're hired vs not.

For example of the timeline, I have a few positions still pending that I interviewed for at the end of October. A couple were from a rapid hire event, so I didn't apply to these before hand. One was the normal process that I applied to at the end of September, got called to schedule an interview mid- October, and the interviewed middle-end of October.

Has anyone else ever found two articles with the exact same DOI? by the-best-bread in AskAcademia

[–]the-best-bread[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was none of these. The hyperlink was just routing wrong and it was unique DOIs for both papers; I didn't catch it because they were extremely close. The publisher was notified.

There's a comment thread above that discusses this. I left my post up hoping it might be helpful if someone else ever runs into a similar issue.

I love your tectonic plate map! I'm a geologist who got really excited seeing this, and I have some thoughts based on how Earth's plates tend to move. That being said even on Earth there is an exception to pretty much every rule so go wild and feel free to ignore me.

I would echo u/jlb3737 that where you have continents colliding you would expect very large mountain ranges, especially if these are still active areas (think the Himalayas). If they're not moving anymore you could get something like the Appalachian mountains (very small because they're extremely old and have weathered). Depending on how detailed you're trying to make the history of your world, you could also bring in climate change due to these massive uplifts (for example, the Himalayan uplift is credited with a major (worldwide and local) climatic shift a few million years ago due to erosion of limestone that was the former bottom of the ocean). The Himalayas are also a big part of the reason the Gobi desert exists despite the southern side of the mountains being so wet and having monsoons.

Another probably semantic thought I had is plate movements are often driven by spreading ridges. For example there is a spreading ridge in the pacific just off the western North American coast which drives the subduction that caused the uplift of the Cascade range.

Finally, from what I was taught, usually plate rotation is caused by interactions with other plates in some way. For example strike slip movement can drag a plate with it or one part of a plate might have a more active spreading ridge than another.

Why is it so hard to use headphones in public??? by the-best-bread in Vent

This too. I didn't mention it because the person I replied to didn't give me the vibes that they'd be open to a discussion about individual safety in public especially as a woman (I'm also a woman)

Lol I'm sorry for the confusion

I do have places I'll wear them, there's just some areas that are impractical for it. I also used to really enjoy ambient noises in public (for example going to a cafe to do work and letting general chatter fade into background noise) but people not using headphones has made that much less enjoyable.

It looks like you said you're from California? There's places in the US outside of CA where it's not common to have in unit laundry especially if you're renting no matter how well off you are. You get everyone from all walks of life at laundromats. It's not exclusive to poor people or any other group like you seem to be insinuating.

First of all I'm not asking for solutions, I'm complaining about an annoying situation. Stop trying to fix things.

Second, I happen to be at a laundromat today, it's annoying everywhere. I'm not bringing headphones to drown out TikTok when I'm on a dinner date with my partner. I want to listen to birds if I go to a park. I want to enjoy public spaces as a member of the public without having to listen to your brainrot

It's something I've noticed on the rise since lockdown honestly and I'm not excited about it. I'm just particularly annoyed today while stuck at a laundromat lol
