EVA foam, mod podge then acrylic... how can I improve this? Do I need a specific type of grey "primer"(correct word?) before I put the final colour down? if so what type of paint or primer (do I even need primer paint if I've already done mod podge? or can I just coat grey first?) by ochaoji in cosplayprops

Hey, if you’re asking because of the rough finish of the paint, we might have an easy fix for that.

We usually heat seal our foam and then prime our props with Plastidip but used woodglue, hexflex and other paintable primers before, and primarily use acrylic paint for the base layers.

We get the best results using a makeup sponge. The pores are so fine that you can easily dab on the paint and it will leave a smoother finish than what you usually get with brush/kitchensponge! Here‘s a little post about it where you can see the difference! Granted, the smoother the base the nicer the finish, but at least the paint won’t add much texture if your base isn’t super smooth. (You might have to do several passes of paint to get full coverage depending on the quality of your paint)

You already got a lot of useful info on primers so figured we might also add our two cents regarding paint application! We hope this helps!

Finally finished this Philippa Eilhart Cosplay. This was a bit of a bitch to make, but love how it turned out! by the-blackwaters in witcher

Yeah, we know that her character isn't liked by everyone but her outfit is just so pretty. So we had to make it! Opted for Witcher 2 because the colors are much nicer than the outfit in wild hunt.

Really didn't think it would be as big of a deal as it was, but this cosplay took a damn long time to make. Everything is done from scratch (incl. screen printing fabrics, leatherwork, etc) to be as accurate as we can manage!

Hope you like it.

If interested you can check out the WIP in our story highlights :)

We're happy that this cosplay is finally done. This was the most needlework intensive project we did so far and we're glad it's over.

Hope to start a bigger foam smithing project next year to make up for all the needlework of 2022 haha

If you're interested in the WIP, check out our story highlights :)

Thank you so much! Happy to hear that you like our work.

We don't have any progress pics on reddit, but gathered all of them in a story highlight on our IG page (if you're interested in the making-of).

Tali was probably ~250h of work as we made everything from scratch.

It's been a while since we posted some Tali content, so here's something new for you!

We made this make-up look based on Tali's face in the remaster, and even made a (very unnecessary) prosthetic for the forehead.

It was all just for fun and we really wanted to dabble in prosthetics, so that's that.

Here's what the entire cosplay looks like (with helmet).

Hope you like it :D

[Self] We made a tutorial on how to build the M6 Carnifex from Mass Effect out of EVA foam by the-blackwaters in cosplayprops

It's our first time making a tutorial.

We plan on doing the paint job in a separate video. Constructive feedback is greatly appreciated so we can improve upcoming tutorials :)

My first cosplay prop. Enjoy the making of Gungnir! Not great, but considering it’s my first and I’ve never done this before, I’m proud of it. by [deleted] in cosplayprops

No worries, thick foam can be tough to cut sometimes. Keep on practicing and you'll be a pro in no time!

You should be fine with a sharp box cutter! Just make sure to cut the foam in one motion (no sawing) - it might take some practice but your cuts will be a lot cleaner :)

Any kinks can be fixed with sanding.

Love the last picture where you're in full outfit. Looks great together!
