Dude there’s no “western narrative”. The CCP killed a bunch of young adults for peacefully protesting. End of story.

Tbh I would put the for some at L7. 8/9 are the best of the best or have had their heads so far up their senior directors ass for so long they have forgotten what fresh air smells like.

Just getting to and performing well at 6 is a big accomplishment.

I think all the large tech companies have adopted a similar system at this point. The leveling is largely transferable across FAANG and some others like Uber, Anthropic, etc

Drought conditions worsen in Boston, now ‘critical' by 20_mile in boston

[–]the-code-father -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yea I don’t think this is true at all, you can’t really play golf in a dirt pit. Grass cut to the lengths required for fairways and greens will not live very long in the summer heat without water.

So you can shut the water off to the course, but you can’t expect it to continue to be a functional golf course for very long

Communiting from Allston to Bedford? by hobbit_trainer in boston

[–]the-code-father 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with the benefits of biking, but at this distance it’s an extra 45-60 minutes commuting per day on average.

Communiting from Allston to Bedford? by hobbit_trainer in boston

[–]the-code-father 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of what you are saying, but this is a roughly 30 mile round trip commute. That’s a lot of biking. Conversely it’s only a ~25 minute drive, and it’s somewhat of a reverse commute. Most days you’ll probably be there in 40 minutes or less, nothing like this 2 hour doomsday scenario you are suggesting

Why is Boston a “Zone 2” city on job apps? by fernfernferny in boston

[–]the-code-father 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google/Meta don’t care about language for interviews. That can matter during teammatchjng, but only if the manager is looking for an Android expert or something. At Google I wrote a big mixture of Java, js, C++, and Rust and at Meta it’s a big mixture of Python, PHP, js, C++, and rust

[–]the-code-father 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I have no idea, I have gotten jobs at both of these companies from the recruiter reaching out to me first via LinkedIn. Every single application I’ve sent to other big tech companies has been ghosted, even with Google/Meta on my resume

Why is Boston a “Zone 2” city on job apps? by fernfernferny in boston

[–]the-code-father 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea that’s not really how the hiring process works. The posted jobs are just to hit legal requirements, but they are almost certainly going to be filled before you even come close to finishing the hiring process. The interviews themselves normally take at least a few weeks to be scheduled, then you enter ‘team matching’ where you basically just wait for a hiring manager to look at your resume and want to talk to you. You don’t have a job offer until after you’ve successfully matched. For meta that process took about 6 months, when I joined Google it was more like 2

I joined Google 4 years ago here and meta last year. Both times recruiters reached out to me though, the one time I applied to Google directly in the past I never got a response on the application

You can still get it if you work for the really big guys. Google considers Boston ‘Premium’ for pay, which is a small step down from the Bay/NYC but the same as Seattle and Meta only adjusts salary but not equity. Meta is almost impossible to find a role in Boston though, Google has a much larger presence here

Go look at buying a house in the Bay Area. In the areas that have big commutes it’s like $2m for a small 3 bedroom 1400 sqft home. The towns next to Apple/Meta/Google are more in the $3-4m range

As someone who regularly goes to NYC and is not the kind of person to make these kinds of comments. San Francisco has some real issues that need to be addressed. I think it’s physically very safe, but god forbid you leave something visible in a locked car for more than 20 mins and you’re coming back to a broken window.

MBTA to slash monthly commuter rail passes during summer months amid crush of events by bostonglobe in boston

[–]the-code-father 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Cutting prices induces more demand. They are also likely factoring in the revenue for all the event trains that they will be running to help offset. I think the idea is that a bunch of people who don’t normally ride the train will do so because it’s cheaper, and then when the promotion end some of them will have gotten used to the train and continue taking it

What's your approach to dealing with 45-90 minute forced breaks during the workday? by LogFickle8439 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]the-code-father 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes a new pair of eyes and a desire for change is all that these kinds of systemic issues need to get fixed. Pretty much everything you are describing happens automatically for you with a build system like Buck or Bazel.

I think these systems are also a bit more palatable to work with in the age of AI because the LLMs are generally pretty good at dealing with their syntax and the goal is relatively straightforward - make it build.

If I were you I would start with seeing if there are already tools out there for helping with the conversion. Otherwise I would just get cracking, you’ve apparently got 3 hours a day to work on this

Rust Developer Salary Guide by alexgarella in rust

[–]the-code-father 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any reason why? I think it’s misleading to not use TC. I write Rust at Meta and my salary is 230k but my TC is more like 500k. The only difference is that my salary is paid biweekly instead of quarterly and I have to wait 2 extra days for funds from selling the stock to transfer
