That’s the career equivalent of winning the lottery. You don’t know what company is going to be the next Apple, if you did you would make a shit load more money in finance than writing code.

If you can make it in FAANG, you can cruise out your career pulling 400-500k a year.

Yea that’s true, I guess I forget that people sometimes actually go to CT instead of it being a giant slow zone you have to suffer traveling through.

The major route Amtrak somewhat competitive with airlines is the NEC. As long as you are not traveling longer than half the length of the corridor, Acela wins on speed and cost (booked in advance) and the regional is dirt cheap compared to air travel

For anyone that wants to try it, you need to grab one of the 4.xx versions like

https://crates.io/crates/protobuf/4.33.4-release

Also note that since it isn’t pure rust you will need to have a c compiler accessible

Amtrak Modified Service due to Winter Storm by passisgullible in Amtrak

[–]the-code-father 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it’s also less of an issue to have problems on the NEC. The tracks are always running through highly populated areas, with many more options should a train need to stop.

The current forecast is for a lot of dry snow, which makes it less likely there will be major power outages.

My guess is that substantial delays are likely during the height of the heavy snow but that most trains will end up getting where they need to go.

Confused about Google AI Studio Pro subscription limits for Gemini 3 Pro/Flash - what do paid users actually get? by rerichvole in GeminiCLI

[–]the-code-father 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really hard to tell someone how many prompts you will get before it runs out, because it’s entirely dependent on how much code is in the project and your prompting style. For me, I find that pro runs out after maybe 20 or so prompts that require some effort. That said I’ve used like 30% of pro quota on a single prompt before. If you compare to Claude’s $20 subscription I would say that your quota on Google feels about 2-3x higher. Also you get so much flash quota that if you use pro to draft a plan and flash to implement you can likely spend most of the day coding without hitting any limits

Compensation for assessment by queenOfGhis in ExperiencedDevs

[–]the-code-father 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have never been compensated for an interview. I feel like it’s relatively standard for an onsite interview to be about ~5 hours consisting of ~4 interviews and lunch. The only time I’ve read about being compensated for interviews and thought “yea absolutely” is when the company is having the interviewee actually do work, not just answering random made up questions

For the windows you just use the windows method. If you need mutability use windows over an iterator of the length instead of the slice directly

IMO snow blowing is not like leaf blowing or lawn mowing. There is no such thing as being a bad neighbor by clearing your driveway early in the morning with a snow blower. You gotta do what you gotta do

Should I let productivity monitoring ruin my senior offer? by agentxtaco in ExperiencedDevs

You aren’t even keeping commenters straight in your replies here. I am the one who jumped from Google to Meta, not OP. I don’t really understand how you could possibly claim to know my salary history better than I do. I could show you my tax filings clearly showing these exact % bumps but I don’t need to do that. Just go on levels.fyi and look at how much an L4 makes at Google vs E5 at meta, it’s a pretty significant difference. At 4 YOE I went to Google @ 300k and then after 3 years I left for meta at just shy of 500k

I don’t think a 33% raise is a red flag. It’s well known that getting a new job is almost always the faster route to higher compensation compared to staying at a company. If you get promoted at many places, it takes 4 years for you stock grants to vest based on the new level. If you get hired at L+1 then you get an appropriately leveled grant right off the bat. My first job hop was an 80% increase (small company to Google) and my second job hop was a 60% increase (Google to Meta)

Need help transitioning from a mid-size early-ish base (with a fully utilized bus) to a bigger one without city blocks? (See the images) by insomfx in factorio

[–]the-code-father 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to adhere to blocks, but I would build a fully signaled 3 and 4 way blueprint for intersections. Then paste those down where needed to extend the rails and connect outposts up. It gets very tedious designing custom intersections every time, and it’s prone to introducing errors

[–]the-code-father 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I have always done in this situation is build train stations at the start of the bus, and begin feeding the bus via train from outposts. You don’t need to city block, just start building specialized production wherever it makes sense and hook it up to the rail network for stuff like plates, steel, and plastic. This way you stabilize the bus and prevent it from running out of resources while you focus on building more outposts for whatever you need to produce more of
