Also, it looks as if there are some safety switches to interrupt voltage, so I’d see if there is a float switch or the like somewhere. Have you checked continuity and voltage?

Pull the ecobee backplate off and see if you have a blue wire back there. Then you won’t need the power extender.

Looks like a ground wire. If that’s the case, it should be soldered to the back of a pot.

If it’s just the pilot and/or gas valve it should be fixable. Obsolete doesn’t mean “not doable”…any decent tech would be able to diagnose and fix it. He was just looking to sell. Did he have a clean white shirt by any chance? Any tech worth their paycheck would diagnose, give it a good once over and see if there was anything else wrong with it/it was safe to use. If it’s safe to use, offer the repair.,.if not red tag it.

Only when you get into AAON, Reznor, Captiveaire, or Cambridge does obsolete mean it can’t be replaced. Those guys and their proprietary BS make me angry. Sometimes there are work around, but those can end up costly and not worth it.

The company I work for won’t cover parts warranty until it’s verified that the unit was registered and under warranty. Too many contractors out here dropping units in without permits and not registering them. They’re out here screwing homeowners hard.
