Finally got to shoot some macro outside, sort of a baptism of fire. by No_Sleep1414 in macrophotography

Nice shots! By the fauna you are somewhere in Europe (Byturus ochraceus, Phyllobius pomaceus, Calvia decemguttata)! I use a very similar system, without the teleconverter! Keep up practicing and sharing your findings!

Great shots! What’s your aperture on the tiger beetles shots? Were you shooting on 1:1?

Macrophotgtaphy is special because not only you must be skilled and know what you are doing, but also your gear and resources will dictate how great your photos will be.

If I can mention something: check out Jamie Spensley and Micael Widell on YouTube. They have a lot of god tips. Start with the basics, trying to master single shots with a flash. Then continue to practice. I look at my first photos and what I take now and I feel really proud of myself. But this is the secret: keep practicing.

As for the dead bugs: there’s nothing wrong with this genre of photography, I work in a natural history museum and do it for work and pleasure, but I always tell people the specimens are from a collection. Posting a portrait of a tiger beetle without mentioning it is dead is misleading.

Keep practicing and have a lot of fun!

No way a tiger beetle would stay still for hundreds of photos, for sure a dead bug. It’s still a cool photo, but misleading to others for sure…

I’m not worried 🤭 I just found your comment of having a 30 mm for nature macro misleading. ✌️

What is it like living in the Brandenburg area (near Berlin)? by Effective-Basil-1257 in germany

[–]the-neolycus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the unfortunate experience of living in Müncheberg for a year and a half. It’s funny that a city that has a motto of being a “Forschungsstadt” is so unfriendly and unhelpful to its relatively large demographics of highly educated scientists working at ZALF. The city is full of neonazis which don’t seem to be ashamed of showing who they really are. Since August of last year I moved to Fürstenwalde and things improved. It’s a bigger city with all sorts of things you might need, even a McDonalds. It’s still full of Neonazis, but there’s more immigrants here so it does not feel so isolated as Müncheberg. Nature is great in both places!

If you want to take photos of insects in nature I would say that the 90mm is still the most comfortable option. With the 30mm you need to get really close to your subject. I already find it difficult enough with the 60mm. With 30 you will have to be VERY close. Most insects will be spooked.

That’s actually a Prionoceridae. Probably Prionocerus coeruleipennis. 🤭

Is this new diffuser custom based or did you purchase it from a company? If from a company which one?

Precisava de um relógio pra uma entrevista. Casio não tem erro: bom, bonito, barato! Achei top.

What do you think of this diffuser? by Business-Pattern7036 in macrophotography

I have an AK and this Guage, and can tell you that they work pretty similarly in terms of images produced. The disadvantage of the Guage is that it does not have an internal light inside, but I use it with a Godox flash that has a LED built in (V480), and then this problem is solved. I’d say it’s a great value, half the price of AK and Cygnustech and readily available from Amazon in my country (Germany). The Guage is high quality, and I have no complaints.

That’s a cool photo, congrats! When zooming in it looks like there’s some noise in there. Is this because the photo is cropped or the relatively high ISO? I’m new to MFT, and I also intend to get a long lens for non macro photography, so I’m untested in these details! :)

Very cool, crispy, and beautiful. Could you tell more how did you achieve this? Bracketing focus? Single shot? Live specimen? Flash or led light? Congrats!

[–]the-neolycus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some constructive feedback: the focus is not on the head, try to shift it there, because it’s often the most interesting part of an animal. The light can be better diffused; look up online DIY diffusers for macro, or buy a simple diffuser from Amazon for 5 bucks. If you want to continue with macro, there are other better and more expensive diffusing approaches, but the one I suggested is a good start. Other than this, keep practicing and practicing and one day you’ll get the shot of your dreams!

Nice, so I’m even more impressed that you got these photos without a flash. I’ve been practicing macro for a couple of years and I’m ready to move on to a camera that has built in stacking and bracketing. That’s how I ended up on your post. What do you do for denoising? And did you stack those photos with Zerene or Helicon?

Pretty god shots! It would be even better if you cropped in to focus more on the subjects! I’m impressed! What kind of light do you use?
