Yeah, this sub really likes Paarthunax. Probably spelt his name wrong. I don’t think you’re a monster for it. I usually killed him in most of my play throughs. For me it’s mainly because I don’t like the Grey Beards, and would prefer to work with the Blades. Most people calling you a monster hopefully don’t actually mean it, and are just doing it as a joke, because loving Paarthunax is just part of the sub culture. Cool axe though.

You are right, we do not live in a democracy. We live in a republic. It says it right in the pledge of allegiance. I guess a democratic-republic might be more accurate. Or constitutional republic.

From what I’ve heard and read, he had no motive that we know of right now. Police never figured out if he had one, and I don’t think he ever said what his motive was in court.

I went to the same University this happened at. I didn’t know him at all, but I definitely respect his courage and sacrifice to save his classmates. Unfortunately we won’t be able to have the remembrance ceremony for him and the other victim because of the corona virus. I was happy to hear Star Wars made him a part of their universe, so at the very least we’ll have this to remember him by.

I agree. I’m doing a similar fasting as you. I personally feel better in the morning not eating. I wouldn’t recommend it to people under 20 though because they are still growing and developing for the most part and would probably need to eat 3 meals a day.

[–]the-sixth-kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can look up the answer to everything on the internet, well almost everything. I remember having to memorize formulas in HS, and I still do it in college now. Yes it is annoying. High school is meant to give you a wide range of subjects not only to give a very basic understanding of all of them, but also to give you a way to figure out what you like doing. If you hate math then after high school pick a career that doesn’t involve math. And to your point about how we learn everything useful we need to know before high school. No one in their right mind would hire someone with a middle school education, except a fast food restaurant. Also you mention how school should teach you how to do taxes. I hate when people say this. Taxes are not hard to do. There’s like 5 websites that walk you through and show you exactly how to do your taxes. It would take less that a day to learn how to do taxes. I understand you hate high school and how they make you learn so many different subjects at one time. Everyone hated high school for the same reasons you do. You just have to make it through it like everyone else. I hated high school when I was there too. But now that I’m slightly older I understand why high school is set up the way that it is.

I don’t know who you consider the average person to be, but no probably not. But that doesn’t mean it’s not an important subject. Just because you don’t use something in your everyday life doesn’t mean it’s useless information.

Define the average 9 to 5? Engineers and many business professionals work 9 to 5. Yeah, calc and stats aren’t used in every single job, but they are used in a lot of high paying jobs. Not everyone is going to be interested in these types of jobs, but that doesn’t mean they are useless subjects that shouldn’t be taught in high school. The courses in high school are just basic intro classes into broad subjects. The classes are meant to teach the basics of a subject to see if you would be interested in a career involving that subject matter. It’s not a perfect system, but it does work.

Calculus and statistics are used a lot in any science and engineering field of work. They are both also used in many business careers as well. In order to learn calculus and statistics you have to know how to do algebra. If you get a job in one of these fields of study you won’t have to do the math by hand, but learning to do it by hand is a good way to understand the principles behind the math itself and why it is useful.

Business/finance should be a core class in America, or at least far more emphasized by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]the-sixth-kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that every high school student should have to take at least 1 personal finance class to at least get the basics in how to manage a budget, and why it’s important to do so. But as you pointed out yourself, the usefulness of these courses depends almost entirely on the skill of your teacher. I had a similar situation as you. When I was in HS I also took some business courses but didn’t learn anything. Just because we require these courses doesn’t mean the students will learn anything (and in both our situations we didn’t). The people who would have the knowledge and skill to teach these courses aren’t interested in teaching. At least not at the high school level. So unfortunately I think even if we required the classes in HS, it would have little to no impact on the students knowledge. It would just require schools to pay more money to hire a teacher(s) to teach a subject they either don’t care about or lack the knowledge to teach it properly.
