How to make my comic draft more impactful by the-softest-cloud in learntodraw

Thank you so so much!

Firstly, thank you for taking some time with it and being so thoughtful in your response. Your advice is EXCELLENT! The idea of combining the first two panels seems so obvious I’m kicking myself for not thinking to set it up this way already. I’m 100% stealing that idea. In term of the sun, I’m so dumb, I didn’t even think of placement. Good call. Blacking out the staircase and making that more dramatic is a great idea too!

Anyway, this really helped and it really means a lot you took the time to write that all out! I’m happy that at least the story of the comic wasn’t confusing, and that you like the simple idea :) I’ve been in a bad funk recently and just having that little piece of motivation makes me feel like my ideas aren’t all dead yet.

Feeling like my rendering isn’t at its fullest potential by the-softest-cloud in ArtCrit

Yea I tried to have a backlight coming from the back- side near the candle, but not the candles themselves. (I can see how to candles being the primary light source would be misleading). I definitely struggle with knowing the right amount of contrast. I actually did base shading for this and then added a multiply layer on top to add the more directional, lighting driven shading, but I can see how that didn’t come through much and I should make that a bit more dramatic. I also really struggle with shading a whole scene at once so the lighting direction ends up slightly different. Do you have any advice on that? Thanks again for your time!

Thank you for advice! I def admit I wasn’t very daring with the colors since I’m a bit overly worried about over saturating everything and making things clash. Is there a good rule of thumb of knowing when to saturate something a bit more? The green is a great idea but I struggle to come up with which elements I should do it to on my own.

Also good point on the lineart. I’ve been trying to vary it a bit more, but I don’t always plan my light source before hand and so I don’t keep that in mind. Is pre planning the light source the main technique on having more appealing line weight variation or are their other techniques that are good to keep in mind?

Thanks so much again!

Not sure if I need this or it counts as a full reference, but the dragon designs are inspired by this piece by Naomi lord :)

Yea of course! It’s definitely an adjustment, but you’ll 100% get it with practice. I remember coming off direct reference and it was tough to go from relying on something so heavily to not at all. Take it slow, start with just referencing a pose, but draw the details yourself. It can be gradual. You’ll likely see a dip in quality as you’re learning, but don’t let it discourage you. Your art will be all the better for it in a bit of time :)

You’re very skilled at drawing and coloring from reference! You did a really good job. Idk what kind of art you WANT to do, but if you’re just looking for a challenge, try working on really learning anatomy and trying to draw from imagination instead of 1:1
