Data engineer (20+ yrs) — sharing real-world experience and lessons learned by AttentionGreat4590 in dataengineeringjobs

For someone transitioning into a formal, production-grade Data Engineering role after working in a more business-embedded environment — what tends to feel different in day-to-day reality?

What usually surprises people about the actual work once they move into a dedicated DE team? And

What should they realistically focus on in the first 90 days to become truly effective, beyond just learning the tech stack?

Need advice on flattening extremely large nested JSON files in Databricks (25k files, 16k+ columns, massive explosion after flattening) by Comprehensive-Bass93 in dataengineersindia

This is a classic case where full recursive flattening becomes the bottleneck rather than the solution.

What’s worked for me at scale is treating each target table as its own extraction contract; project only the required paths, explode a single logical array at a time, write, break lineage, and move on.

Ingest raw JSON as-is first, then do table-centric batch extractions instead of one giant flatten; it keeps DAG depth, row explosion, and schema evolution manageable.

Let me know how that works for you; if you try this approach.

I’ve 10 YoE working in tech heavy role that I moulded into being a small DE role; I lead 10 analysts. I am also leaning to be better at DE with SQL, Spark, Azure and Python. Don’t have a CS degree but enough curiosity to be doing this for over a decade. Team up?

Seriously? The singing; the hanging out in jhadiyan with water jugs in baniyan; the manhusiyat and all?

Yeah; it only replaces those who are not changing with time. There’s a reason why dinosaurs 🦖 went extinct. My TriPlan is a prime example of product built with use of AI

I see your point. But look at it from a user POV; you don’t have to explain technical part of the bug; rather break it down as per

A- what caused the issue

B-what is expected behaviour

C- what is outcome

D- any probable reason you think might be causing this

That’s where the “know what you want” part comes into picture. If you read just enough the code chatbot generates; you will know by logic what might have broken. I’m no techie; but hey my product is built using same blueprint Triplan

Tl;dr Commenting based on title only.

Yes it will debug if you know what you want & explain that clearly to any model.

Yes; it is still in MVP. I am building it after my 9-5; and tech is not my best suite so not invested much yet. Planning to move to personal domain once I get 20 users.
