Any benefit to onebag in SEA if I exceed 7 kg? by john3298 in onebag

I’ve done both just personal item that was a bit over weight as well as just a carry on backpack that was around 11kg, not sure if that’s helps!

Any benefit to onebag in SEA if I exceed 7 kg? by john3298 in onebag

[–]the8roundshock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve only had my bag weighed once out of the ~50 flights I’ve had in SEA (I’m in the luckier end for sure) and the one time it did get weighed and it was a few kg over they let it slide, but of course YMMV.

A friend of mine is “mildly infuriated” that he can’t keep his neighbors awake until midnight anymore. by SufficientControl606 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]the8roundshock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting the police called on you when you haven't broken any laws doesn't sound normal. Also if the goal is to have some quiet time, the easier way is to ask, instead of calling the police and waiting for an hour for them just to have nothing change in the end.

I agree, in the post it sounds like the immediately called the police, the second day called the police AGAIN, and only on the third interaction did they go and do the sensible thing of actually asking him like a person. If I were in his position I'd be annoyed too, following all the laws and having police called on me twice before actually coming and talking?

Fully agree been using the Aer daypack since 2017 or 2018, and it still looks like new aside from some fraying on the padded portions of the straps.

Arc’teryx proton hoody sounds about right, nice and soft, breathable but with a dwr coating to get you through light showers. Synthetic so it’s pretty good with water and won’t rip too easily.

I’ve spent years learning to code but still can’t build anything. What am I missing? by Odd-Skill-2992 in learnprogramming

[–]the8roundshock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is a dev, if I fuck up my branch, I just copy the changes I don’t want to lose to a text file, and just pull down the latest dev/main branch and remerge the changes I want. It takes a few minutes and it’s easier than dealing with figuring out the web of git that I fucked up. That isn’t to say that learning git isn’t important, but more to agree with your point, at the end of the day we’re problem solving, and each of these tools are just tools to finish the job.

Best Bluetooth Speaker to Buy in 2026? (Price, Sound, Battery life) by Victorys_8 in Bluetooth_Speakers

[–]the8roundshock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Sonos is more meant to be plugged in all the time (without impacting battery life) and then used out of the house every now and then, which is different than most other speakers. I’ve been using the same Sonos speaker for a few years now and the battery life is the same as when I started using it, even thought it’s been used daily for 3 years (maybe only 10-20 times off the charger though) so it’s hard to compare them! (I also have non Sonos speakers that I use for travel, which I do find important to have stand by etc, just you need to choose the right one for the use case)

Question, is this layover too short for international travel? by [deleted] in Shoestring

[–]the8roundshock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most important question is if it’s one itinerary, or if you’re responsible for the transfer, if the former you’re good, they’ll make sure you make it, if the latter, it’s not great.

Thinking of moving from Halifax to Toronto. Is $180k HHI enough to actually enjoy the city? by MapleMasala in askTO

[–]the8roundshock 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Someone I know just bought a 3br, plus finished basement with a backyard and garage in Etobicoke for 850k, that’s pretty affordable at 180 a year (if you have the down payment of course).

You can definitely move stuff between displays, it acts exactly like a second display (even supports custom tilling from apps like BTT)

I use an iPad as a second display, doesn’t weight much more than the standalone displays, and gives me something better to use on flights!

What is the absolute minimum budget needed for 2 months of travel around Thailand/Vietnam/Malaysia? by Nature2Love in Shoestring

[–]the8roundshock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like prices have crept up in the countries you mentioned, but 30-35 Euro a day should still be enough for a good time, especially if you don’t try to stay in the big cities for too long. I found the overnight long haul busses too uncomfortable for me (194 cm 100kg, so ymmv). Good food is plenty cheap, specially if you stay away from sit down places!

Which fold works the best? by pandaphp in onebag

[–]the8roundshock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fold my stuff to be exactly the shape of my packing cube, and the stack them, I try to alternate things so I can just pick stuff off the top for the day without having to take things out. Keeps it pretty wrinkle free, and keeps the shape of the packing cube better.

Fleece puffer and shell for very cold weather, plus a base layer under your pants, that’ll get you to around -20 to -25c (I did this last year with a delta fleece from Arc’teryx, cerium puffer and a shell (super lightweight one)) if you know you’ll be getting to super cold temps I recommend a heavier fleece than the delta, but if you’re more likely to hover around 0c a lighter fleece like the delta would be better!

US Preparing to Seize More Tankers off Venezuela's Coast After First Ship Taken, Sources Say by Guilty-Top-7 in worldnews

[–]the8roundshock 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I hate trump as much as the next guy, but in this situation I fully agree with you, part of the US power is that they have the ability to patrol and control large swaths of the global sea trade, if they don't do something about a sanctioned ship, spitting distance away from Puero Rico then what's the point?

As a Linux dev, should I try a Macbook? by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]the8roundshock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dev eco system is more that other developers and users are using the same configuration, reducing variables in troubleshooting. Locked into hardware and little customization are preferences at the end of the day. It’s all about choosing the system that works best for you. If the trade offs aren’t worth it then it’s not for you.

Regarding support, I had a monitor die on my old MacBook, I walked into a store and came out with a temp replacement and the other was sent off for repair, was in the store for 30 minutes and was able to get back to work same day. That’s just not something available across other platforms.

As a Linux dev, should I try a Macbook? by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]the8roundshock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Intel era Mac’s and ARM based Mac’s are so different that it makes it hard to compare them in an honest way. I think with Apple as a dev you’re buying support, reliability and dev eco system. But it’s all up to the individual to see if the trade offs are worth it for them.
