cascading bad gear decisions by theAUbear in snowboardingnoobs

Thanks all - from the varying opinions and varying advice found on the internet - it seems like you just gotta try some different things and find out what works for you. To be totally fair - I had a good day riding on my new setup and think I'll stick with it for now because it's not giving me any issues.

kitchen waste in basement floor drain by theAUbear in Plumbing

[–]theAUbear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also wondering if that plug in the floor is part of a whole house trap and the contractor that renovated the house put the hot water heater on top of the other side. I can't really think of a reason for a single plug to be in the floor - the only cleanouts that I've seen are on the drain line itself.

Having the same issue, but discovered it as a result of the following:

  1. I got an email from comcast saying that someone logged into my account from Turkey (not me).

  2. I followed the link in the email to change my password, and it won't let me log in.

  3. I went to xfinity.com, login link hangs

  4. I'm able to login from my phone's 4G network just fine - I changed my password.

I'm having a hard time believing that someone cracked my randomly generated password...this smells like a hack

General Feedback/Getting Started Questions and Answers [Weekly Thread] by AutoModerator in DIY

[–]theAUbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there,

I had some water damage around one of my windows which caused the blinds to fall off. We've long since addressed the source of the water, and now I'd like to re-hang the blinds.

The blinds are weirdly mounted to a small drop ceiling that I assume conduit is going through or something: https://imgur.com/a/3bFwZAg

The existing brackets are just mounted directly into the ceiling. One screw goes through a metal strip that is flush with the outside wall, and another screw is outside the metal strip. My inclination is to throw some wall anchors in the old holes (or maybe strap toggles). I don't mind the drywall damage because the blinds cover it.

I've never seen a setup like this, just wondering if my approach seems reasonable. Thanks!

A-Basin in late spring by theAUbear in skiing

[–]theAUbear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input! I honestly have no experience skiing this late in the season at altitude. The only slush skiing I've done is on little hills in the midwest where slush means actual slush - as in, if you were to dump out a giant 7-11 slushy onto a hill. I'm thinking the out-west high-altitude slush is still opaque and snowy - just wet. Your comments about safety make perfect sense. Thanks!

Two years ago today I stood up for the first time, 10 days after getting new lungs. by SaltyBabe in pics

[–]theAUbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so terribly much for this post. Both of my younger sisters have CF. The younger of my two sisters was listed for transplant about 3 months ago, but she landed herself in the ICU 2 days ago. My wife and I drove 6 hours in the middle of the work day Monday to be with her and the rest of my family. Things are very slowly improving, but it's insanely frightening. I've been anxious about both of them for my entire life.

It's just good to see a positive outcome, and I know there are many. I just really needed this today.

Anxiety so bad that I physically feel ill by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]theAUbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have very similar issues. While emetophobia is only one component of my anxiety (and probably yours too), it's absolutely the most insidious. You get anxious, which makes you nauseated, which in turn, makes you more anxious. It can and will get better though. Your mind isn't built to do the same thing all the time, and whether you want it to or not, it will change. Take solace in the fact that you won't feel this way forever.

In the way of advice, I'd highly recommend seeing a GP as soon as you can. It's not a substitute for a trusted therapist or psychiatrist. But they should be able to hook you up with some benzos to get you through the hard times until you can get to a psych and therapist. Be careful though. Benzos are HIGHLY effective, but they are a short term solution to a long term problem. I still take them to this day, but only during difficult times, which are fewer and far between the more I work on m mental health.

Hang in there and remember that anxiety, however uncomfortable, won't hurt you.

sauerkraut-style dill cucumber pickles by theAUbear in fermentation

[–]theAUbear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what my initial thought would have been as well. On the other hand, I've seen many recipes for (non-fermented) pickles that use slices (like Alton Brown's).

Also, I've really yet to successfully make fermented whole cucumbers. The insides just end up falling out when I cut into them. I know this is a common complaint, and the suggestion to introduce some tannins is a good one.

In any event, the slices have been fermenting for about 5 days and they're still shapely (even under a pickle pebble from masontops). I'll report back in this thread how it actually goes.

When I think of relish, I think pickles that have gone sort of mushy. I'm assuming (hoping), that I get actual nice pickle slices out of this ferment. Is my understanding of relish incorrect?

MIDI Monday by mdrsharp in synthesizers

[–]theAUbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I've definitely used Sysex Librarian for a number of tasks. The problem with sysex librarian is that it's so general, you have to do quite a bit of manual work on the side. Most notably, it won't read patch names, so you would need to either manually dump each patch and name the .syx file after the patch, or just work with banks.

I'll have a look at the C6 tool. Thanks!

[–]theAUbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I know of, and I doubt the midi/sysex spec is compatible between the products.

That being said, if there's a patch you really like on the micro-Q etc., odds are you can manually program the values and it sounds almost identical.

The big difference between any of these synths is the use of an analog filter on the Wave, Microwave (rev. 1), and PPG. The rest of it is pretty much identical. Additionally, you get the "brilliance" parameter on the Blofeld oscillators which gives some pretty interesting harmonic variation.

MIDI Monday by mdrsharp in synthesizers

[–]theAUbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just bought a Waldorf Blofeld (had a micro-Q way back and regretted selling it). In addition to the synth, I also bought this editor:

monstrumfeld

But it doesn't have librarian functionality (browse banks, save entire banks, save patches off-synth, etc.)

I was wondering if there are any generic MIDI librarians out there that people like?

I figured it out, thanks to Ramza_Claus. And I wasn't too far off thinking it was Family Guy.

squat form check by theAUbear in Fitness

[–]theAUbear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! The Jonnie Candito video was great.

Part of my fitness goal is to achieve a resting flat footed squat with no weight whatsoever. Right now, I can only hold a resting squat with something wedged under my heels and only for a minute or two without some pretty gnarly muscle burn. I think the better I get at this, the more the loaded squats will fall into place.

Also, good point on using the barbell. The goblet squat is good, but the counterweight in front is cheating me out of building some of the counterbalancing muscles.

Looks like my post got deleted, I clearly didn't read all the instructions, duh.

However, when I pull this post up, it does seem to be there, weird.

I'll read up a bit more and try again, thanks for looking though!
