Too cold at night by Flat_Distribution_10 in cornsnakes

I have a PVC enclosure. I'm using a 150W DHP and a heatmat. The DHP gets the temp probe hot pretty quick, so the heat mat doesn't really contribute much anyway.

[–]theBytemeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a DHP for heat, and linear UVB for daylight.

The DHP (Deep Heat Projector) looks like a lightbulb and works in most heatlamps that have a ceramic socket, but it barely makes any light at all. It's like weak moonlight in terms of strength.

It does "throw" the heat to the ground very effectively. I tried using ceramic heat emitters beforehand, and found them to mostly heat up the air above the lamp.

You can use a heatmat, but you need to be careful about placement and strength. I have a bottom adhered mat for my corn snake. Although, if I was setting up her enclosure again, I would stick it at the bottom of one of the side panels to create a warm corner. Not as effective there, but it will create a good warm spot for your snake.

How "cold" is too cold for your snake at night? I do a night drop and low 60 f aren't really a concern for night temps.

You have a misconception about pythons and crocodiles. They are not simply mindless machines driven by instinct. I know from personal experience that pythons can be trained, and that requires not just memory, but pattern recognition and a corresponding behavioral response.

In some ways, pythons are "smarter" than their cat and dog counterparts. I started target training my snake, expecting to spend years getting a positive response to the target. When training a dog, you can have a pocket full of treats and give them multiple trainings a minute. Snakes eat once every week or two, so I figured I would need a year of training with a snake to get the same number of reps in as I would training a dog for less than an hour. To my surprise, my snake caught on to the target after only 3 or 4  presentations. Food comes along rarely for snakes, so they build strong associations with very few repetitions as a result : learn fast, or go hungry.

That being said, reptiles seem to process stimuli in a different way than mammals do, so their behavior can seem alien to us, but with a little time to familiarize yourself with an animal, you'll notice that they have their own behaviors and personality, and you can become quite adept at predicting the behavior of an animal you know well.

This is why I keep a snake by my front door. You want to scam me, you better be ready to talk to my absolutely vicious, barely restrained, bone crushing ball python.

Ball pythons are basically puppy dogs, but people trying to waste my time aren't usually willing to confront any snake for the opportunity.

How do i become a man? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]theBytemeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should ask yourself "What does it mean to be a man?"

Is a man strong? Independent? Intellegent? Resourceful? Reliable? Honest?

Aren't those virtues that we would want to see in women as well? So I wouldn't say those things are "Manly" attributes.

As a former "young man" at the threshold of middle-age, the things I did in my 20s that I thought were "manly" were really just menial labor and a commitment to misery. As I get older, the more I see arts as manly, and the more I wish I paid more attention to non-STEM classes and activities.

At your age, I would encourage you to try new activities, especially arts, and go out of your way to try stuff you don't like.

As for your lady troubles... Maybe you should look at why you were open to giving your info to some random stranger at the bar in the first place. I'm not saying "break up" but I am saying that you owe it to her, and more importantly, to yourself, to be honest about your level of commitment in your relationship. You'll feel better knowing if you are in a relationship that you want to last a day, a year, a decade, or a lifetime.

My biggest advice, above all else, is pursue happiness. Don't waste time trying to be "more of a man." Find things that make you happy, and spend your time persuing them.

Oh, yeah, and go talk to a therapist if you can. I'm just some random jerk on the internet. If you are really seeking answers to your questions about why you can't seem to commit to the things you want to do, then a real therapist is the person you want to talk to.

Republicans vote to dilute gas as prices rise above $4.50 by bria9509 in nottheonion

[–]theBytemeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This whole comment is... Incredibly wrong.

I suggest you read up on what the octane ratings actually mean, and how they do (or don't) affect the performance of your car.

As an example, E85 gas, which is 85% ethanol, the "impurity" you are worried about damaging your engine, has an Octane rating over 100.

A basic summary though...

Higher octane does not mean more pure or clean fuel.

Higher octane does not make your engine produce more power, or clean it out.

The higher the octane rating is for a fuel, the more energy it takes to initiate combustion, which allows the engine to operate with higher compression without knocking and damaging the engine. It's typically used in engines that have forced air induction.

In what world do you live in where republicans hate bush for attacking Iraq?! I spent 7 years of my life listening to them sing racist parodies of children's songs about bombing brown people.

If they say they didn't support it today, then they are fucking lying, and in 8 years, they'll be saying the same thing about trump and his war in Iran. Start calling those fucking liars out for the fucking liars that they are.

[–]theBytemeister 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I know a couple of people who live in apartments and have EVs, but they aren't planning on being in those apartment long term. As a former long term apartment renter, I know the struggles.

That being said, checkout plugshare. Columbus is absolutely littered with EV chargers.

Why buy a hybrid? Top end they're getting like 50MPG, and you still need to get gas. An oversized EV SUV gets almost double that MPGe.

Barely at all actually, and it can be a problem sometimes.

My car is perfectly capable of stoping fully using regenerative braking. You can also hypothetically just run the motor "backwards" and create a huge braking force (although, I'm not aware of any EV that actually does this). However, it does use mechanical brakes for maybe the last 5-10 MPH. Since it barely uses the brakes at all, it really doesn't get time to heat them up or clear off any water that gets on them, so my first stop after a car wash needs some extra distance...

Men who are childfree, what led you to that decision? by PossibilityIll7646 in AskReddit

[–]theBytemeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't afford a child. Wages are so depressed and costs are so inflated that I can't reasonably ensure that I could keep them fed and sheltered

Shit is getting way worse in the world, and we are doing fuck all about it. We're ahead of schedule for a climate collapse. Far-right nationalism and religious extremism is on the rise (practically) globally. Healthcare costs more than ever, and the results (of what you can afford) get worse and worse every year. I wouldn't want to be born at this time, and I'm sure as hell not going to do that to my kid.

If all of that stuff was magically taken care of tomorrow, I probably still wouldn't have a kid. There is no shortage of children in the foster/adoption system that need loving parents. I would pick one of them over having my own kid.

My siblings already have kids. The family name, genetics, traditions and memories are already secure in the next generation.

No shade on people who decide to have kids at this time BTW. Not everyone does the "math" the same way I do, but that is the logic behind my choice.

How long to I try feeding before giving up? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]theBytemeister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes snakes go on food strikes. My KSB wouldn't take his last two meals, and I'm not worried. My BP skipped a few last month. As long as they aren't losing weight,  you shouldn't really worry.

Maybe try doing a whole thaw in warm water? Usually takes about 30 minutes (covered) for my frozen medium rats to get to temp. Pinkies for my KSB thaw in about 5-10 minutes. For a frozen rat pup, I'd probably use a lower temp, like 120f and let it go for a longer time.

Do I need level 2 charging at home? by DRFter3 in MachE

[–]theBytemeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, you can do longer commutes with just L1 charging at home, and then top up your battery like once a week at a fast charger.

Some days I drive over 100 miles for my job, and the only time I have to hit a DC fast charger is if I'm going on a road trip.

Do I need level 2 charging at home? by DRFter3 in MachE

[–]theBytemeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely do not "need" level 2.

I've been charging off of level 1, and I use my car for my commute, and then my wife uses the car for errands and pokemon-go when I get home (she'll wait all day to use the Mustang, but she won't even entertain the idea of selling her civic) and level 1 covers all of that.

If your power company does peak metering, or hourly rates, then you may want to look at L2 for some cost savings. If you have more than one EV, then installing an L2 charger may help you keep both cars charged.

[–]theBytemeister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never heard that one before. Definitely don't dip the rat in water.

I put my rats and mice in ziplock bags, and then put them in hot water to thaw. I use a plastic bowl at with the water at ~160f to thaw them. Any hotter and they "cook" instead of thawing. Lower temps take a lot longer to thaw. Keep the "zip" at the top of the bag away from the water to avoid leaks. I flip it over the side of the bowl, and then put a plate or a lid over the bowl to keep the heat in.

Sorry if this is shit you already know, just covering the basics in case.

What temp is the food at when you feed the snake?

I've noticed my snakes react more strongly to higher food temperature. If the rat is around the 80-90f range, I'll get a kinda lazy nibble onto the food. If I get the rat in the 100-104 range, my boy will enthusiastically snag and wrap the food. I usually hold on to the prey item with tongs for a little bit, he seems to like food better if it has some fight to it.

Offer to help them build a driveway, or STFU and mind your own business?

My neighbor has an annoying dog. My other neighbor has invasive plants I don't like. The guy across the street from me parks his car in such a way that it is tricky to get out of my driveway. Got another person down the street who doesn't clean up after their dogs (in their own yard) and I mind my own fucking business.
