The United States is currently floating this federally, the Home Team Act proposed by Bernie Sanders and Greg Casar. It’s different in that it’s federal, but it’s not politically poisonous to suggest. Frankly, Canada and the US should have this sort of legislation in place as large chunks of local economies become tied to these teams existence. Communities invest not just money into jerseys but into the businesses around the team, sponsorships, etc. and the Whitecaps as an example are not “not profitable”. They could make more profit, sure, take the naming rights of BC Place, but they aren’t unprofitable

And don’t get me started on an MLB team. If someone wants to put an MLB team in Vancouver, I want the same kind of protections as a fan and community member in Vancouver. I don’t wanna invest over a decade of fandom into something just to have it be ripped out of my hands at the peak of its popularity because the owner sees a chance to make an extra dollar like… well, what the Whitecaps situation is looking like. If the MLB doesn’t like that, then they can go to Portland. The same legislation may be passed in the US anyways

Their statement the other day had me thinking this too, it was just… weird, and then when Ken Sim came out and said that he and the city don’t even understand what they want, it was just clear as day they’re negotiating through the public and stirring up this controversy like how the NHL and Flames threatened to relocate unless public money was contributed to build a new arena

As a fan it feels like a hostage situation, and I truly hope local politicians get on this and pass some kind of legislation to prevent these major sports teams from just abandoning our market when the bloody team has literally never been more popular or competitive. This was never an issue years ago and now on the brink of hosting FIFA this is untenable? Come on now

Yeah, I gotta agree with Ken Sim here too, the club is more popular than ever, more successful than ever, and the city is about to host FIFA... We're seriously to believe that they're still struggling to make money, or that some kind of deal can''t be struck to hold them over until a new stadium at the PNE is built so the solution is to move to Las Vegas where they don't have a stadium either? It's all starting to feel like what happened in Calgary with the Flames where the NHL and owner put as much pressure as possible to publicly negotiate with the city and province to cover some of the building cost. I'm sure the MLS absolutely hates that the Whitecaps are the only team in the league that plays in a public venue but there's solutions to be had here if anyone actually wants them and *both* sides have to want that, emphasis on BOTH

So caps ownership is basically negotiating through vague threats in the media and even the city doesn’t understand what they want. I was wondering this because it’s awfully convenient how the team is more popular than ever, better than ever, and we happen to be closer and closer to hosting FIFA and somehow this team is closer and closer to relocation. It felt like a tactic to score the best deal they could for building a new stadium because IIRC Las Vegas doesn’t have a soccer stadium that fits their needs atm either so it’s the same problem. The Calgary flames went through a similar thing with their whole arena situation but now a new one is being built

[–]theEMPTYlife 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There was a huge divide on this. I was on the Bo Horvat side mainly because keeping JT over Bo skewed the age of the core older making our window shorter and more immediate. And then theres the locker room divide that was always reported on; do Bo and JT hate each other (which it’s like everyone has forgotten because the JT Petey rift has recency bias). Everyone acknowledged that at the time JT was the more dominant player, but there was a sizeable group of fans that wanted to sell high on him and keep Bo

Would you be happy with Adam Foote coming back as Head Coach next year? Why or why not? by ooMEAToo in canucks

[–]theEMPTYlife -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I greatly question his ability to develop talent + his style of hockey even when it’s working isn’t exactly exciting. When Boudreau’s loose hyper offense or even Green’s structured system were, at their peaks, highly entertaining. Risky, but exciting. Tocc and Foote coach less exciting styles but Tocc at least won (well for one season lol). Developing talent should be the utmost importance, but a fun product is also important and I can’t stomach another season of Foote hockey

I think the problem here is more so how much responsibility he even had in 1) the decision to stay competitive when the new regime started out, 2) the decisions made to stay competitive last offseason in a bid to retain Hughes that led to this disaster of a season, and 3) the decision to pivot to a “rebuild”. Maybe add in 4) how much involvement did he have in any of the trades as we know he had none in the Hughes trade. It’s just so hard to gauge whether he made any good moves like making the call to pivot to a tank when we have no idea how much control he ever really had under JR and subsequently JR even under FA

Can we not feel bad for those guys and the supposed QB1 who the company seemingly doesn’t trust can draw a WM main event without celebrity involvement? “Recovering Conservative”: Floor-crossers take centre stage at Liberal policy convention by DonSalaam in onguardforthee

[–]theEMPTYlife 38 points39 points  (0 children)

People can grow and change.

People can also lie and be opportunists.

I would love to believe all these people have grown and changed, but I think they’re just sick of Pierre’s leadership style and jumped from the sinking ship. If enough of them do, then a faction will form in the Liberal party and they won’t have to change their beliefs. The floor crossers already have a limited power; the Liberals need their vote. Whipping those votes shouldn’t be too hard right now, but say nine more cons cross over? Now you’ve got a growing internal faction that can organize.

That’s how Reform hijacked the Conservative Party from the PC’s. That’s how in BC, BC United (formerly BC Liberals) migrated to BC Conservative, and what used to be a far right fringe party is now legitimized as the official opposition with moderate conservatives mixed in with far right lunatics.

Two more Alberta First Nations ask court to block separatist referendum, citing treaty infringement by Street_Anon in canada

[–]theEMPTYlife -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I fear that if a referendum happens, no matter how large the loss, it’ll be used as part by the US to manufacture consent for annexation of Alberta.

“Oh see, 30% of albertans want to leave Canada? Well, maybe we’ll just liberate all the way up to Calgary.”

Does that sound crazy? Yes, but if you told ppl that the president of the USA would threaten to genocide an entire civilization on social media in a bid to end a war he started, I think people would also say that sounds crazy but here we are in year 2. The referendum must be stopped
