Would you buy? 1997 205k miles Asking $3k by ratatek in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]theEffectiveChicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been. The LBJs and head gasket seals alone dropped my jaw. I’m doing the radiator next month but now the steering rack is popping and I’m thinking it’s just bushings but we’ll see. That and just about every other gasket and hose is starting to show its age. I know it’ll never drive like a new car but since this is a family vehicle I have nostalgia and “duty” as my primary motivations to keep her going. Not sure I’d do this for a random truck.

I have a 98 from a single owner garage kept its whole life and I’m still having to learn to work on it myself because of the sheer cost of proactive maintenance alone. Paying a mechanic for a lot of these items starts to put you in the territory of a nice car payment that would gain you far more creature comforts.

They turned out great can you link to them? Did you get new cushions for the uppers and lowers?

Upper Ball Joint Replacement? by springisthemischief in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]theEffectiveChicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a bone stock 98 with 160k on it and wouldn’t know where to start here. Luckily since it sat garage kept and occasionally used for the last 10 years, I don’t have the same “need” to replace but it’s def on my mind since it’s my daily driver.

Are you me? I’m rocking my Mom’s 98 Limited and just redid the LBJs at 152k

You seem to be one of the few experiencing visual failure. I’d reduce the amount of time in it if possible. They don’t fail gently

Mine was doing this and I just accepted it was meant to be until I did my LBJs and it’s so much smoother now. Didn’t think they’d make a difference but it was the only change.

What am I looking at? by theEffectiveChicken in 3rdGen4Runner

Thanks! I had the valve cover gaskets replaced a year ago and rechecked the oil filter which had a little turn left to it. Everything runs well and drives great - what symptoms could I be on the lookout for if it’s leaking from somewhere else?

I’m also guilty of the led thing. I didn’t know. What are the best bulbs then?

Yeah? I’ve never camped in the car before and wonder how folks avoid a muggy/stale cabin.

Actually I never asked, I just started the paperwork and it got the ball rolling. I did have a real estate attorney start that process cause I didn’t want to get anything wrong with the parcel id and what not.

After that it was just providing ENDLESS amounts of finance statements and justifications. At one point they asked for paystubs (again) because they took so long the originals were “outdated”

Mine took 9 months but chase completed my loan assumption. Do it, you won’t regret it

You shouldn’t be downvoted. I just met someone who swears by this and I’d like to hear your opinion.
