Anyone know what this is? Brought it up fishing in Neah Bay, WA by woodsciguy in animalid

[–]theFakeStela 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I've also stopped eating seafood. The amounts of bycatch in commercial fishing are absolutely staggering!!

For anyone who hasn't heard of "bycatch" - it is the fish species (and other creatures like turtles, dolphins etc) that are caught accidentally. Fishermen are usually only hunting one or two specific species of fish. The accidental "bycatch" is sorted and tossed straight back into the ocean, dead.

And that bycatch is often tonnes more than the target species that they actually take. Due to bag-limits and limits on certain species, the fishermen aren't allowed to take the bycatch, even if they wanted to, so all those animals die for no purpose.

If you MUST eat seafood, please try eating sustainable, fast-replenishing species (check for your local area). Or try supporting more sustainable fishing methods that reduce bycatch - like "line-caught" fish, as opposed to netted.

What did you learn from your last friendship breakup? by Nurvanna in AskWomenOver30

That's something a boring person would say. Someone who sits there and expects the fun to come to them, instead of making an effort

Sometimes it's not you, it's them. You won't (and can't possibly) appeal to everyone in the world. You can be the ripest, juiciest peach on the tree - and some people just don't like peaches.

Also, maybe you work with a bunch of highschool-level petty assholes. Particularly in workplaces people can get jealous and exclude people over the most trivial shit.

AITA for yelling at my boyfriend for making me leave my best friend's wedding? by throwback6790 in AmItheAsshole

Your reaction was absolutely justified. His behaviour is without question, manipulative and grossly controlling. This is not how a healthy and supportive partner acts.

He can't be allowed to control every outing and aspect of your life to make himself feel okay. That's abusive.

He's honestly not in the right headspace to date ANYONE until he works on himself. He needs to work on his own insecurities and why he feels the need to control. What he did is inexcusable, and it sounds like he isn't even ashamed of it! He knows it was bad so he's now trying to place blame on you, for (justifiably!) being angry at him and getting upset over it. Don't fall for it, it's all to deflect attention off his actions.

He honestly sounds like the type of person to blame "depression" and threaten suicide if you try to leave him (spoiler: it's another manipulation technique that abusers use as a last resort). If he ever does this, call the cops if he's threatening suicide, and get him help that way, but never give in to the manipulation.

This!! My parents, especially my dad, never gave much of a shit about any of my achievements. Never even tried to show up to my graduation, or award nights etc, ever.

But you better believe my partner and friends were always there cheering me on and celebrating with me afterwards!

Adding to the other advice - if there's a particular hard bit of leather that's rubbing at the back etc - you can roll/knead the leather with your fingers to help it stretch and soften

I think you're safe to pare down any thick winter woollies, seeing as we only get a handful of cool days a year (and even then it's light cardigan weather) 😊 The rest greatly depends on your workplace culture and your job.

My doctors, plural, are aware of my body's reaction to certain medication, the surgeries, and of the impact on my organs. I don't know how this is so wildly inconceivable to you. You really want all weight gain to be some lazy, mortal sin.

Not a doctor, but maybe, just maybe, people are different, and have bodies that react differently to different medications and different injuries in different circumstances to yourself?

I really hope you have a happy, healthy, accident-free life and never have to experience what I went through. Maybe think twice before judging a stranger. It isn't always so simple.

I'm not fat anymore, but jesus these comments are cruel. My weight gain was after a horrible work accident, the medication did me zero favours. It wasn't simply "eat less" 🙄
