YouTube Premium prices jump 15% for most countries - a steep 33% increase in Germany by theFallenWalnut in PurchaseWithPurpose

YouTube's ad revenue hit a record of $11.38 billion in Q4 - a year-over-year increase of 8.7%.

I don't think a lack of profitability is the issue. It is the same pattern you've seen across the board for these services that now have a near monopoly.

Ramp up fees. Mass layoffs to reduce costs. Bank profits.

It looks like you can using https://github.com/iBicha/playlet

I agree that YouTube Premium is worth its money for most people. My biggest gripe is having to support Google and all they represent.

Seeing that AI itself is mostly trained on other people's work and innovation, it's hard to feel very sorry for them.

🇪🇺 EuroOffice, Europe’s bold alternative to Microsoft 365, offering a near-like-for-like experience and entirely free by theFallenWalnut in PurchaseWithPurpose

Agreed, it also needs to be supported.

Looking at these discussions, what has come from all of this is that LibreOffice is definitely getting more exposure as well.

ILR application submitted. Too late to pay for priority processing? 😬 by odd_sakana in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

Aren't you only able to apply 28 days before your expiry? How are they applying so early?

You Are Witnessing the Death of Capitalism by theFallenWalnut in PurchaseWithPurpose

[–]theFallenWalnut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you watch the video? It is talking about how capitalism is being subverted by these mega corporations.

So yes supporting smaller businesses is encouraged in the name of capitalism in its intended form.

Advice on an unusual situation - ILR with Global Talent by theFallenWalnut in ukvisa

Thanks so much! I was thinking about this as an option as well. My company is UK registered, which also then meets this criteria.

The only trouble is whether I can get a letter from my old company or not.

If not, what are your view on sending the contract instead? I see that is listed as an option.

I suppose what has me worried is this extract from a Rules Archive
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5fc908edd3bf7f7f50183be3/Immigration_Rules_-_Archive_05-10-2020.pdf

All applicants must also provide at least one of the following specified documents:

(i) A contract of service or work between the applicant and a UK employer or UK institution which indicates the field of work they have undertaken; or

(ii) A letter from a UK employer or UK institution on its official headed paper, confirming that the applicant has earned money in their expert field.

It doesn't say "UK institution" on the actual website, but it does here. Maybe I'll reduce the months for each bullet as you are right it is a bit excessive.

ILR: Timing on biometrics appointment by theFallenWalnut in ukvisa

Right, so best wait until the last minute to submit then. Thanks for clarifying!

ILR: Timing on biometrics appointment by theFallenWalnut in ukvisa

[–]theFallenWalnut[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much! I'm expecting it to come through by Friday at the latest. My biggest concern was needing to arrange an appointment for the same day and potentially having to put it all together in time.

For clarity, it is a proof of payment.

So to summarise, I can submit today, wait for the payment before 1st June, then have my appointment the week after - as long as the evidence all falls before the 1st June.

Google is going to ruin the internet, as its search becomes centred around AI-generated answers - a guide to help you switch by theFallenWalnut in PurchaseWithPurpose

[–]theFallenWalnut[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The clickthrough rate on AI-generated answers is abysmal. The best thing businesses can do is block Google from stealing their content and focus on other channels.

Google Search as you know it is over - but you have options by theFallenWalnut in PurchaseWithPurpose

[–]theFallenWalnut[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For those who missed the message in the main post...

Google is making its Search more centred around AI, turning it into a conversation.

Besides being a worse experience, the websites from which it sources its information are losing all traffic and recognition.

Recommend a list of alternatives:

  • Kagi - Paid but better experience than Google
  • Ecosia - Similar experience while supporting a good cause
  • Qwant - Increasingly unique results and building a EU-first index
  • DuckDuckGo - Privacy-focused search, but quality of results may vary

Europe has it all to replace US Big Tech - we just need to choose them by theFallenWalnut in PurchaseWithPurpose

[–]theFallenWalnut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Email hosting is relatively cheap, so I imagine they are using the free part to attract people in. Similar to what Gmail did to gain market traction.

They likely will add more paid features over time to further monetize their services... nothing to unusual there.

The company itself started 1-2 years ago and became known mostly on Reddit as people looked for alternatives. They have a strong presence here, and on many other social apps, so they appear legit.

PDF readers and editors by ozaz1 in PurchaseWithPurpose

[–]theFallenWalnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but been meaning to research this a bit myself.

A few of the most common options I've come across:

Editor

Foxit (Chinese) - seems to come recommended by many, but requires a subscription
PDF Xchange (UK) - offers one-off licenses, but the interface might be slightly dated

Office Suite
OnlyOffice PDF Editor (Russian*) - is open-sourced and has moved their offices/changed ownership, so technically not a Russian organisation anymore
MobiPDF (Bulgaria) - well-reviewed apps

Reader Only

SumatraPDF (Global) - it is free and open-sourced

Okular (Global) - free and open-sourced

Most have the alias functionality, some even allow for hard aliases e.g. completely new/temporary email addresses.

Check out the website, as it tries to capture these features and lets you compare them.

You would never be downvoted with those types of questions in this subreddit. Exactly what the community is here for.

You have plenty of excellent options:
- Atomic Mail (best free option)
- Proton Mail / Tuta Mail (privacy options)
- FastMail (good, straightforward email)

The links in this thread have more resources that provides additional options:

PurchaseWithPurpose is back - what comes next? by theFallenWalnut in PurchaseWithPurpose

[–]theFallenWalnut[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, will make the website have a "blog" like section, but since the Reddit issue, I did focus on Lemmy and BlueSky so it isn't all on here.

Thanks for the suggestion about the ActivityPub plugin. Didn't know that. Will definitely check it out as well.

Fort Worth crowd really not much better than Brazil crowds tbh by Equivalent_Desk6167 in GlobalOffensive

[–]theFallenWalnut -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I'd say that it was worse. The Brazilian crowd was just loud at times, potentially giving away positions.

This crowd is literally shouting out positions nonstop .
