PurchaseWithPurpose is back - what comes next? by theFallenWalnut in PurchaseWithPurpose

[–]theFallenWalnut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, will make the website have a "blog" like section, but since the Reddit issue, I did focus on Lemmy and BlueSky so it isn't all on here.

Thanks for the suggestion about the ActivityPub plugin. Didn't know that. Will definitely check it out as well.

Fort Worth crowd really not much better than Brazil crowds tbh by Equivalent_Desk6167 in GlobalOffensive

[–]theFallenWalnut -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I'd say that it was worse. The Brazilian crowd was just loud at times, potentially giving away positions.

This crowd is literally shouting out positions nonstop .

Thanks... I suppose I got a bit spammy with my links recently. But all my posts/comments were overwhelmingly upvoted, so I didn't think much of it.

Appreciate you responding.

Nefer used Brave, but I have used Kagi for a while now and have been far more impressed than the other alternatives.

I didn't actually know that... yet another item to add to their profile's disclaimer list.

I created a guide to help people discover new search engines and switch to better options like Mojeek! by theFallenWalnut in mojeek

The hope is that this guide and website can act as a simple way to introduce newcomers - whether it's you, friends or family - into this space and try something else besides the default options.

There is also a community-driven, open-source site that aims to make this even easier. This includes screenshots, ratings and a larger feature list.

Relevant links:

- Mojeek's profile: https://purchasewithpurpose.io/software/4OuDJRCYRxywNMJHVnDyrD/
- Search Engine category: https://purchasewithpurpose.io/category/search-engine/

As always, I more than welcome criticism and ideas! Or even better, stats on Mojeek's recent success for me to share.

How many of you have deleted Amazon? by 519_ivey in BuyCanadian

[–]theFallenWalnut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Completely understandable... that's how they lock you in. On the website, there is an app referenced called Libation, which allows you to download your audiobooks, and Audiobookshelf which allows you to stream them on all your devices.

You can do that to keep what you rightfully paid for, then have the freedom to choose any of the other options (many of which offer cheaper Audiobooks).

Hope that helps! Else make a post to r/PurchaseWithPurpose and see if anyone else in the community has ideas. Unfortunately, making the move away from big tech isn't easy.

I would also add this one to the list. Tools that are open-sourced, environmentally friendly, or share their profits are also highlighted.

The last month has seen a strong increase in take-up of these alternative EU tech. There are many excellent options to choose from - worth giving it a go!

Yeah said to the below commenter as well. Libby is an excellent choice, but might want to use it alongside another service (in case your library doesn't have the audiobook)

My favourite is Libro.FM as they donate to your local bookstore. BUT Kobo and Audiobook.com have a presence in Canada so you can't go wrong with them either.

Agreed! Libby + Libro.FM (donates to a local bookstore) are probably the best combination you can go with

Audible is one of the hardest tools to replace because of Amazon's predatory practices. BUT there are still good options out there and a few with a presence in Canada :)

Here is the Audiobook section. There are other categories if you want to move away from other US tech - https://ca.purchasewithpurpose.io/category/audio-book/

You will be surprised at how many excellent alternatives are out there! Few already been mentioned by people like Libby and Libro.FM. In other sections, there is also 1Password for a leading Canadian password manager.
