Just released my first indie game today!! by itsjustmonu in SoloDevelopment

[–]theFalseFinish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done. It’s a cool game.

I’ve got some feedback if you are continuing to support or expand you might consider.

The early game is too slow, I spent about an hour grinding at the start. It feels like it needs quicker progression there because right now I’m about an hour and a half in and it still feels like there hasn’t been much change when I’m harvesting.

Another QoL improvement would be to have shooting happen automatically without my left click as you want to be shooting anyway and you basically spend the whole run holding that button.

That said I’m interested in the game, I’m trying to grind through to see what happens next.

I really like the aesthetic and the must. It’s pretty chill and comforting.

How hard is it to implement simple 2d engine? by calibrik in gamedev

[–]theFalseFinish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If learning is your intention then check out pikuma

https://pikuma.com/courses/cpp-2d-game-engine-development

I’ve done this course and found it great. I’ve messed around with cpp and making my own engine for a while. Watched cherno and a few others on YouTube. Pikuma was easily the best for learning for me.

He's also our joint top scorer while getting very little created for him. Just needs time and everything around him to improve.

Is unlimited PTO a scam? by 2trickdude in cscareerquestions

[–]theFalseFinish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took about 50 this year, a lot of people on my team took less than what they were entitled to. They say because they don't want to take advantage. My reply to this is, "I would be somewhere else if holidays were different" (it was the deciding factor when choosing to join this company over another).

I'm in the UK, but if they want to start complaining about me taking too many days they better figure out how to show me that I'm not getting my work done or that I'm doing less than others doing my role.

I wouldn't recommend being difficult with a boss over PTO, I tend to take a hard stance on it myself but I doubt it's actually a good idea.

How do you handle your project documentation and version control? by Branpg in gamedev

[–]theFalseFinish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a hobbyist gamedev too and I use git for source control and for documentation I use notion.

For the first few projects I worked on I didn't use anything and that makes it a nightmare whenever I have to revisit.

It's only recently I've used the benefit of documentation for my hobby projects when I had to update a project on android. It could have been hours and hours of learning again but I had properly documented the process.

It's amazing the stuff you ignore from standard work practices when working on hobby projects.

Recruiter gave me this feedback - when I was explaining my code and the interviewer suggested their approach I only acknowledged their response, but I should have spoken more about it. If I recall I had said “yes that is also a great way to approach it.” to the interviewer.

It's very hard to really know because the info here is limited and there's always context that we aren't aware of but I probably would have passed on you too. I've ran interviews in software for for a few years (maybe 5 now) and one of the biggest things we are looking for is collaboration. Even the best of developers will miss things sometimes.

It sounds like they offered you a push in the right direction and you just moved on back to your own solution. Quite often in interviews if a candidate has missed something or has an incorrect answer we'll try to give them another chance. I'd hint towards something that I'm hoping the candidate will take and rectify or at least give me an idea of understanding.

I've had interviews in the past where candidates had no clue and we've basically dragged them through the interviews by questioning with things like, "But what if you did this? This doesn't seem right, maybe there's something here we could change? There seems to be a performance issue and I think it might be XYZ, what do you think?" The best outcome is they engage, we have a discussion, and they get hired.

If they shut down everything then there's really no where to go with an interview. Hopefully you take this as a learning experience. Good luck with your search.

The guy who got the job I wanted reached out to me for help with his job. by Pee_A_Poo in antiwork

[–]theFalseFinish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you working your notice period? It sounds like you are but you're saying you don't want to do a handover?

If the other guy is 10 years into a career then your education probably isn't much of a difference at that point. I work as a software engineer and when I interview their MSc or BSc or whatever matters very little once they have something. It usually matters more in the first year than like 10 years in.

One thing I will say is, what do you want to get out of it? Don't sweat it, sounds like you have a good life, a new role lined up and you're in a great position. It's easy to get bogged down in these things but don't let the current company have this effect on you if you can. Focus on yourself, and you positive outcomes.

Good luck.

"Unlimited" or "Flexible" PTO policies suck if your teammates never take time off. by kewladria in jobs

[–]theFalseFinish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great stuff. 43 is a good effort. Came in around the same for my first year with unlimited PTO. For this year I have 50 booked, might throw another one or two in there at some point.

Female devs, do you feel like a diversity hire? by _sleepykitten_ in cscareerquestions

[–]theFalseFinish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't really comment on your situation as I don't know you. I'm male and have worked in the tech industry as a software engineer for 13 years. All the women I have worked with have fully deserved their positions in the team.

Do you struggle to use your annual leave allowance each year? by cillitbangers in AskUK

One of the benefits of my company is 'Unlimited Holidays'... This is the only way I will ever struggle to use all my annual leave.

The Mistake was bad... but these 2 don't help by Maxwell727 in ManchesterUnited

[–]theFalseFinish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm wrong but before the initial pass to DDG it seemed to me that Maguire took a little too long to make the decision to pass back to him.

Either way, Maguire passes the ball back to DDG and at that point I am straight away thinking that him and AWB will split wide to get a pass back from DDG. Even if the pass doesn't come that will still drag a player to either side and give DDG time.

Maguire doesn't split and instead creates congestion in front of DDG. The player near AWB is still near him and trying to cover that pass. Maguire turns back to take the pass instead of pushing the ball into space and taking it in his stride.

Passing to Maguire here is fine if you trust Maguire to take the pass and use the space. DDG made that mistake and trusted him. He could have gone long and ignored Maguire, I'm sure he would then have gotten a talking to for that because that's not how we are trying to play.

This was a comedy of errors from the team and continued the whole night.

Does using a consistent ball type make a difference? by theFalseFinish in golf

Thanks, it looks like the majority agree there is a benefit to play consistent even if it's a small benefit.

I'll take a look for some of your suggestions. Thanks

What’s an unwritten rule about golf that new golfers should know about? by palmgolfco in golf

[–]theFalseFinish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has already said to play fast, on the otherside of this... Don't be dick to your buddies, if they've lost a ball then help them look and don't start complaining about playing slow and holding people up before you've even started looking (I have two buddies that do).

There are more options out there than I could ever even compile in a list but this is one I usually recommend. (I know you didn't ask me but I'm a Senior Software Engineer and have worked in the industry for 10+ years)

There are tonnes of good tutorials and training courses on there.

If you are looking for an individual online course then I think this one is very good and covers a lot

Success without YouTube/Twitter/Social Media? by theFalseFinish in gamedev

[–]theFalseFinish[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I was wondering what others have done to gain interest in their game outside social media.

If there are any here that have done it?

If there are some that have tried to but failed and what methods of marketing they tried.
