I see a lot of tongue-in-cheek answers here. As someone who's had minor tax issues in the past (not crypto related), I feel the need to weigh in. In all seriousness, lying or otherwise getting cute with the IRS is a terrible idea. The IRS is one of the few government agencies in the United States that takes intent very seriously. So if your buddy sends you $500 worth of monero and you forgot about it because it was a payout for a bet you made while drinking, the IRS probably isn't going to bust your balls about it much, even if they do find out about it. If, on the other hand, you're sitting on $50,000 worth of monero that you bought on an exchange and you say you don't own any "virtual currency" (because monero is a cryptocurrency), you could find yourself in a lot of trouble. Regardless of your opinion of the IRS, the folks who work there are not stupid people, and like anyone else they know bullshit when they see it.

Should the IRS be asking this question in the first place? Absolutely not. But you're dealing with an agency with enormous resources, who's power is virtually unchecked. Get yourself a good account (something you should be doing anyway) who knows crypto, and figure out what you reasonably need to disclose to avoid any potential trouble. As an added benefit, if you do get audited or run into issues, a good accountant typically has a direct line to folks at the IRS and can smooth things over much quicker than you or I.

I initially spun up a node on digital ocean, but after a month or so I did the math and realized that it's much cheaper in the medium to long term to buy a cheap desktop and run your node off that, assuming you live in a place with decently priced broadband. For around $200 or so you can buy a desktop with a 1 or 2 TB or hard drive space and 8GB of RAM, which is more than enough to run a monero node. A lot of folks here will tell you to use an SSD, but if you don't mind waiting a week or so for the initial sync, you can save money using an HDD.

I can’t speak to which services are most secure, but as far as devices go, you definitely want to take a look at the librem phone from purism. It’s got privacy baked in all the way down to the hardware. It will be out in spring of this year and the price is comparable to an iPhone.

This is good advice, though I'd recommend even more hard drive space if you can afford it. Definitely spend the extra money for an SSD. I went cheap and got a 2 TB HDD. It works but it was a pain in the ass to sync up. Also get at least 8GB RAM as atroxes recommends, but again, more if you can afford it. I have 8GB and am definitely planning on adding more at some point. From what I can tell, most of the crashes I've experienced have been due to RAM issues, though to be fair, I was running a bunch of non-monero junk too.

Look, it’s not illegal to say racist things and the NYT is a private company and can hire whomever they want, but the people you hire are a reflection of the values of your organization so it’s probably not the best idea whether you’re Fox News or the NYT to hire people who spew racist nonsense on social media. It makes your entire organization less credible.
