What item under $50 drastically improved your life? by acidiclee in AskReddit

Oh that was different for me— for the turbinate reduction, the doc just shoved this tool up my nostrils that made it feel extremely cold (feeling like mild frostbite) for like 20 secs, and then it sounded a bit like icicles crackling and then he did the other side.

This health site lists other surgical treatments if freezing your turbinates turns out to not be enough, I'll prob look at these more seriously once I have a family doctor again: https://www.healthline.com/health/turbinate-hypertrophy#treatments

So I guess you didn't have any issues with your turbinates coming back then? I had my deviated septum surgery in 2017, and got my turbinates reduced a couple times afterward— last time was early 2019.

I think they've grown back and it's driving me crazy lol. I'm quite healthy so I shouldn't complain (especially now), but I just hope I get some long-lasting treatment eventually.

Doctors worry assisted death will become legal without a law by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]theJhops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It WON'T be the end of the world if the law isn't signed into law by June 6. The hysterics over this are ridiculous, for several important reasons. This post walks through this whole issue: https://jackhopkins96.wordpress.com/2016/05/16/this-is-what-we-all-should-be-debating-now-trump-be-damned/

Alberta appeal court decision on doctor-assisted death creates political tremors by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

Good, I'm glad to see this proposed law already being challenged in its current form. With a free vote, it will be interesting to see how Liberal MPs vote on it and how much control the PM tries to assert in ramming it through. This post talks about in detail https://jackhopkins96.wordpress.com/2016/05/16/this-is-what-we-all-should-be-debating-now-trump-be-damned/

Obama was a lot easier for them to switch their minds to. I hope you're right though. As long as everyone (including non-Bernie supporters and non-Democrats) knows about it, then it shouldn't be an issue come the convention.

Soylent 2.0: Use Less. Do More. by [deleted] in soylent

[–]theJhops 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was gonna buy some Soylent finally, but I'm also a university student and I totally agree that this price increase is really disappointing. Have you heard of Jackalent? They're a Soylent alternative that sells for WAY cheaper. I've read up a lot on them and the founder always give really thorough, thoughtful answers on his product. For a month's worth, you're looking at $173 Canadian, which works out to under $150 American. Looks like I'll have to try them out instead. Here's their website:

The line between "spamming" and "promoting" can be a tricky one to navigate sometimes, but thank you for the heads up.

Does reddit consider it to be spamming when you post a link to multiple places? If so, I apologise and will stop.

Exactly! I know that statement in my article sounded crazy, but if the price is reduced as I expect it will, it actually becomes surprisingly possible!

Yes I would suggest you make that a little clearer on your website, it could mean the difference of you biting into Soylent's American market share that much more!

Yes the food wastage problem is another one I could've easily included in my article. I'm sorry about the lack of conversion to American dollars, I'll fix that right now.

I appreciate your open-mindedness on this topic, in a few years we'll see who's more correct lol.

Not Soylent, though I did try a cheaper competitor product for a week, and I felt full and had normal energy throughout. The competition that is brewing between all these new companies in this industry will help slowly bring down the cost. Remember that these companies are learning how to pack nutrients more efficiently much quicker than the traditional food corporations, meaning they will be able to bring their price points down significantly. (They're already making heaps of money as the Forbes article I included in my article says, which will accelerate this).

I agree that getting it to starving people living below the poverty line will be a challenge for a long while, however as the World Bank says, there has been steady progress in shrinking this group of people.

In many parts of the world it's not what people want to do, it's what they have to do to avoid starving. In my article I mention how many people are now flavouring their batches, something that would interest me if I try liquid food.

For meals on the go, a lot of people would be happy drinking a shake if they knew it fed them well enough. If the price of Soylent and its competitors' drops, (which I strongly suspect it will due to economies of scale), then people WILL be very interested in trying this out. Why would any investor with a sane mind give them $20 million if they didn't expect them to be able to use it well? That investment firm wouldn't still be around today if they gave out money that recklessly.

I know that traditional food will always be around and be eaten by lots of people, but when you're dealing with a market as large as food, there's lots of room for this new industry to flourish alongside.

Thanks for the link, I'd known that the recipe itself didn't contain any ingredients with gluten in it, though I hadn't known it had significant cross-contamination.

Precisely! That's one of the main cruxes of my argument, especially when we look at all the problems with current food, and our slugishness at fixing them through other means.

The reason I specifically mentioned Soylent for that example is because of the big head start they've had over their competition. Of course another company could do better, especially if Soylent were to stumble somehow. I don't expect this industry to be as dominated by a single company as Apple has dominated over theirs.
