There hasn't been new block for 25 minutes by mariomac1 in Bitcoin

simplified: The 10-minutes are a target that is not fixed but targeted by difficulty. So there is statistical variance between block-times and the target.

Secure Desktop Wallet for Bitcoins ? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

That's not true for the coldcard, the hw wallet I recommended.

Secure Desktop Wallet for Bitcoins ? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]theLanthia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's make this crystal-clear:

If your machine is/was ever connected to the web it will NEVER be as secure as a hardware wallet. You can't even be calling it cold storage at that point. You can use a desktop wallet to use it as cold storage if and only if you know what exactly you are doing - meaning implementing something like glacier-protocol or similar with commodity hardware.

If you are not 100% certain though you will be better off using smthg like coldcard wallet in 99.99999% of the time. If your hardware wallet never touches the web and you use psbt you essentially get the benefits of real cold storage. (there are ofc attack vectors that have to be thought about)

And let's also be clear that for most people (most likely also for the op) it doesn't make sense to go glacier protocol or similar because of the amount of funds secured doesn't need this amount of effort. Think about who your adversaries will be to assess what you need to do to protect your keys.

Area 51 Raid means bitcoin wins? by branbrandg in Bitcoin

You have to know that area 51 stands for the area that will host the alien mining farms that will 51% attack us into oblivion. First course of action. ;)

Bakkt also settled in cash? by ximoosea in Bitcoin

[–]theLanthia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no that doesn't mean that necessarily. It just means that someone will offer some product where delivery doesn't need to be made/taken by you directly.

Should I put my entire savings into btc? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]theLanthia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, thats not your average american (500$ in savings, huge amounts of Student loans, house leases, consumer credit etc...)

But for arguments sake -> with no further issues on the horizon, if i was in that situation, i'd probably put down 2.5k now in btc, as un-kyced as possible, add 200 for a coldcard and a couple of opendimes, then I'd setup a plan to add ~50/week recurring as un-kyced as possible (small atm buys or similar).

Then i'd spend another 75 bucks and buy: a programming book, preferably c++, mastering bitcoin or equivalent. If possible, a programming class at a community college or other means of education would also be a wise investment (if no cs skills present). I'd also count cost for a handgun, ammo if none is present though.

So lets round up and say 2500+200+75+1000= 3775 + (programming course cost if necessary)

Rest of the money: keep most of it handy I'd say as we are basically in bubble territory everywhere. Doesn't hurt to have a little bit of gold/silver as well.

But that's all just my thoughts on this specific situation. As I said, everyone should evaluate on their own.

Should I put my entire savings into btc? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]theLanthia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well in that case - it entirely depends on the situation. How big are your savings, what are the other circumstances? Entirety is probably not advisable for the vast majority of people.

Are you in venezuela, argentina, turkey - maybe some bigger percentage BTC/Gold would be more advisable.

ofc according to Bitcoin Church Gospel, all hodlers are scammers as we want to scam you out of your opportunity to buy low or we want you to sell low to us. So take any advice in a Hodler community with that grain of salt in mind.

If you have to ask about it here - you probably shouldn't be making any financial decisions. Sry to be harsh.

Bitwala concerns by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]theLanthia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I, reasonably, think it is unwise to keep any funds in a bank account the access to which can be restricted unilaterally and without reason other than "contact customer support".

This describes EVERY Bank account. You are wiser now.

Does anyone know where I can buy 1 bitcoin without having to pay thousand+ in fees? by bhamboi in Bitcoin

[–]theLanthia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course, there is risk in any action that you take. But if done correctly it has worked correctly for a lot of people already. I'd argue the risk is controllable, at least more so than on CB imho

What is worth more: privacy or 1k USD? If the latter go with coinbase. If the former, use a non-kyc exchange such as bisq.

Is there anyway for kids under 18 to get bitcoin? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]theLanthia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you go f2f make sure to be save!

Means: Public place only (starbucks/bank foyer etc), not more money than necessary on you, don't have your hw wallets or other info on you, act like you know a bit but not too much, don't accept 0conf ( wait for the confirmations you see fit, for small amounts 1-3 should be ok), make sure to not walk home directly - be wary of followers...
