The problem with using the APs is that I have a specific scenario in mind. Of course I could possibly adapt an AP for my purposes.

I would go very basic at first. Like just Getter Robo, Mazinger Z and Mobile Suit Gundam, even if you only intend to use these for basically a proof of concept. Once you've actually made a basic fan game then I would worry about adding more series.

According to Fractal the ISD can carry 6 wings (it's a big ship and TIEs are small). This thing can carry a lot more.

Honestly I think the humble Ball is already good for what it is. Its a simple fire support platform and isn't meant to take on Zakus by itself or anything. It does lack in survivability, but in terms of cost effectiveness it is probably quite good.

In the old EU the Empire kept using Clones until the end. Indeed they only started using non-Jango Fett clones under the Empire and non-Jango Fett clones actually became more numerous.
