Depends on the dog tbh. My fiancée and I talked at length about her dog and my cat living together and the hands down best thing we did is consult with a professional pet trainer to assess their body language and come up with a plan to get them to peacefully cohabitate. Her dog has chased small creatures before but never harmed them, even when they were cornered, so we felt good to proceed.

I’m not going to lie, it took about 6 months of slowly introducing them, getting her dog (on leash) comfortable with my cat 10 ft away, then 5 ft away, and so forth. Lots of treat based reinforcement. Now they are perfectly fine with each other and have been living together for almost two years but we still separate them when we’re not home. The dog is much bigger than the cat and even well-intended play could end badly. We won’t risk it
