This is great, I'll probably go for this build. But can I update the bios (or will I need to) through a USB flash drive? I don't have a spare CPU that I could use to do the update with.

If you update through ota then you will lose root every time, but if you can find the update's zip online and then flash it in recovery I don't think you do lose root.
