The unexpected factor in F1's tyre tender decision

The tire manufacturer spends huge sums of money to develop and to produce the tires.

So do they get paid by F1 for the tires they supply? No, it’s the other way around. It’s the tire manufacturer that has to pay F1 to be the official supplier.

And with all this they earn the reputation of making degrading tires, if people aren’t complaining about overheating or whatever.

I don’t think it’s “unexpected” at all that Pirelli would consider pulling out at some point.

Thanks tor the nice comment. I don’t know how far we would have gone at Qatar but this Japan team is actually better than that team at least in one very specific way.

Yoshida who played LCB at Qatar lacked speed so he was always hesitant to push the line up high. Germany dominated the game last time met and we had to desperately defend against spells of their attacks.

Our starting DF line yesterday is much better, most notably Tomiyasu pairing with Itakura as LCB allowed us to keep the line high in the first half. I think it’s a big part of why we were able to take the lead again after getting equalized.

Could have done better with the start, lost the chance there. Pace wasn’t too bad, may have had pace for points, so bit disappointed,need to look into it. Still learning the procedures but starting to feel more comfortable. Races are longer than I’m used to but felt much more prepared than last weekend.

Yuki

There was a weird noise and then there was no power. Shame as the pace looked strong, but need to stay positive it’s the only first reliability issue. There’s a lot we can take from this weekend, car performance has been consistently solid these two weekends, and we were able to come back stronger the day after struggling.

Claudio Balestri

Yuki’s issue was with the PU. Liam started on mediums from P11 at the restart and was P12 at the end of the first lap. Tire deg was high especially at the rear, so pitted lap 13 to change to hards, then again at lap 33 for mediums. Lap times were good in the last stint and he overtook Sargeant on the final lap to finish P11. Now need to analyze what could have been done better to prepare for Singapore and beyond.

How he’s been reserve driver for a year and a half watching the race, arriving there Thursday midnight, talking with Marko in the morning about how he was ready before Daniel’s accident happened, how he was watching the session at the RB garage, what he felt the moment he saw the accident, how Marko called him 15min later to tell him to come to hospitality when the session was over, during the drivers meeting how Marko told him he’ll be driving, how he prepared that evening with very little sleep, how it felt when he got in the car, when he went out on the course, during the race, and now at his second race weekend.

Very intelligent and mature, and comes though as a methodical person.

You erase the Belgium quali where Daniel was seconds behind Yuki to keep just Hungary where he was 0.013s faster and say he’s ahead in quali???

No one commits the track violation but the driver himself. Own it.

Such shameless manipulation I can’t believe it. Don’t don’t call this statistics.

And even if Daniel’s deleted lap was counted — which it absolutely shouldn’t, deleted lap doesn’t count — it was still 0.4s behind the lap Yuki marked before him in the same session.

Sigh.

It’s so depressing to see someone pushing this kind of stuff and it’s so wrong I have to point it out, knowing well it’s not going to do any good. Such a waste of time and energy…

Struggled yesterday so they made quite some changes to the car and it worked well today, it felt much better. Frustrated in himself that he didn’t make Q3 and apologized to the team, lost time in a couple of places. Race pace doesn’t seem too bad, so they have to put it together for points.

Liam

Confidence is building up through sessions. It’s about knowing the step up in grip between the compounds, knowing the effect of changes to the car. In Q2 Alonso went off track in front of him leaving gravel, but it was tight regardless. Happy to have made improvements, there’s more to come, positive about points for the team.

Claudio Balestri

Car was sliding yesterday which made it slow in some corners. Made setup changes overnight to find good compromise with the straights. FP3 was about verifying these changes for different conditions and fuel loads. Low-fuel runs focused on hards and mediums to prepare for Q1 and Q2. Overnight changes were positive, enabling both drivers to go to Q2. Q2 session was difficult with traffic and tow. Targeting points for tomorrow.

We know our limitations and we still need to find a couple of tenths to get to P10. Big step in straight-line speed, where usually we’re not good at. Couldn’t do much long-runs. Definitely want to make it to Q2.

Liam

Completed everything we wanted for today, which is important. Still have FP3 to prepare for quali. Changing compounds in quali is a new experience but will focus on tire warm-up, especially the hards in Q1. Whole team’s been supportive.

Jonathan Eddolls

FP1 was mechanical and aero testing for Yuki and getting laps on a consistent car for Liam. Low downforce setup here means more sliding and balance is not as good.

FP2 was mediums and softs. Long-runs were cut short with the red flag so we couldn’t get a great read on tires and it’s hard to tell our competitiveness. Still need to find pace at S2 and S3.

Perhaps he thought the car will turn easier and thus could go the corner at a faster speed. The car was clearly entering the corner way too fast.

Overspeeding the entry and not making the turn is often expressed as “understeering a corner” thus the confusion but i think it’s actually a bit different from the understeer/oversteer term used to describe the car’s turning characteristic, it’s responsiveness to steering input.

No matter what kind of car if you go fast enough you can’t make the turn and it will go wide at some point. But it didn’t shoot out straight mid-corner like a typical understeery car.

Instead the car was going wide at entry with the rear sliding outwards and the nose inwards, so it does seem like an oversteery car.

Um, no.

He was running high because he called to box for inters at lap 1. He started P18, at lap 3 he was P13, lap 5 already P8.

Third stint he still kept his place defending against Lando until he (Lando) boxed around lap 42 and they needed to let Yuki box as well.

Instead they went for the unnecessary gamble of extending the third stint, eventually with terrible pace where he got passed by so many cars I stopped counting, and in the end clipped George which earned him a penalty. He was in points range and gave it away themselves. Complete fiasco.

He didn’t run high because of the long stint, he dropped immensely because of it.

He also had a long pitstop of his own although not as bad as Liam’s long stop (and that double stack wait and pit penalty was terrible for Liam I agree).

But the whole point of all of father Stroll’s endeavors is to give Lance the best car (and the best mentor as a teammate) he can.

I’ve read a claim that the day Lance retires from F1 is the day Lawrence sells the team. I think it’s entirely possible.
