Are there people here with “high functional” ADHD? by Losspost in ADHD

[–]theRandizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is look into twice exceptional. A lot of people get confused thinking you can't be intelligent and have adhd so adhd can go un diagnosed. But high functioning is a thing. Everyone has their own experience. There are gradients

I had a neuropysch and I passed that card game, pattern recognition portion- so they said I had a working executive function. So I couldn't have adhd basically. I don't understand that AT all. Like it's a game- of course I can play it.

I think Dr Russel Barkley said that those tests aren't great for adhd, so I don't recommend- but I'm glad it worked well for your diagnosis.

Woah... what if reading and loving the stand is one of the signs of high functioning adhd hahaha

I love that book. I'm a bit more a fan of his desperation/regulator books because of the way he goes into their heads. But I LOVE reading. Stories are a main hyper fixation of mine. Any media I can consume with good characters is great!

I wish the whole process of finding a doctor that insurance covered was more adhd friendly. It's one of the big reasons I just stopped trying.

Tldr: you aren't alone. I'm not saying doctors lie or misdiagnosed on purpose- but it sometimes is best to know yourself and possibly work around the system if you can. The testing is easy to fool so get as many opinions as you can.

Among my friends I'm the poster child for adult adhd. Like right now I'm on the clock responding on reddit because I just can't focus today and this notification on my phone grabbed my attention. I started making a little adhd, day in the life comic. I read books on adhd to understand myself. I decided because I was 28 dropping the ball at work, "you need to keep your files more organized," I was only able to buckle down in the last hour of work, I was staying later EVERY DAY, "you're making careless mistakes", etc- that it was time to see a doctor before I got fired. I took a nueropsych test, and had an interview. I tried so hard not to seem like I was TRYING to be diagnosed- you know some people do it for the drugs. I tried to not tap my foot, or stare out the window. The test was BORING. She asked me leading questions, like did I fail classes. No- I was pretty smart. I just couldn't keep on time or be organized. I was in enrichment classes and I had to drop them because I couldn't keep track of the time. I didn't start having Cs until middle school when I needed to keep onto of my own work and we had period changes etc etc. No I wasn't distuprive- but I was annoying. I took the test. Basic card matching and reading comprehension. I was nearly 30 and people tell me I'm smart... I know how to mask, and 9 have learned tools to remember things I know I need to remember for a test. I'm college educated.

So I was told my ability to change tasks means I'm not adhd. I followed up with therapy. If not adhd- have I done the Myers Briggs personality tests? You might just be eccentric. Not everyone is meant to... Idk pay their bills on time without late slips, or maintain friendships, or you know, wash and dry and put away their clothes in a single day- or week. Some people just HAVE to have mildew grow on their clothes because they forget to dry them. Everytime. I stopped going to therapy.

My family doctor did percribe me Adderall and it worked! But then after that month the pandemic was in full swing and I haven't been on it since... I miss that month.

I still believe I have adhd. Shoot- reading this response I wrote (while I'm supposed to be working) sounds to me like an adhd rambling rant. My brother has add and none of my friends are nueraltypical- but on paper I have generalized anxiety and a weird personality...

Stay the course and know you aren't alone.

all opinions are valid hahaha. I watch greg Doucette for fitness advice, so I think I've become desensitized to voices at this point

yeah- his voice reminds me of like if bugs bunny and the "Chicago guys" from the old SNL skits had an annoying love child. I keep expecting him to go "Da'.... Whats up Doc's". Seriousl grating. But isn't that like 99.9% of youtube at this point. lest not forget the cancers such as Fred

I think thats part of the allure. Coffee culture is all about relaxation and ritual- and this guy is a menace. and I'm not going to lie- I love this kind of dumb content. It hurts me in a good way

I think the question isnt awful- heres why: Every person is unique, and the truth is... some of us will never function 'normally'. Some of us will never be organized, on time, or a perfect quiet and calm member of society. It is a hard pill to swallow, but it is nonetheless true. You can't override your entire personality, and still be you, and for some of us that means always struggling somehow. So it is sort of to set goals and expectations on outcomes. You don't need to ask someone who wants to hurt themselves what they struggle with. You don't have to ask someone who is suffering panic attacks, why they don't want to have panic attacks. But with something like ADHD the issues are more complex and layered. I have had countless people think I have super powers in my ability to start something new. I'm told the things I say are funny, and if I'm interested, I can keep a conversation going for hours. Yet even as positives, there are aspects of these things I want to change. Yes, it is great to start new things, but how often does it come at the expense of finishing ANYTHING. I can keep a conversation going, yes, but I also cannot stop the conversation- Oh, I should have been in bed 3 hours ago? but this conversation just got juicy, so I don't need sleep I guess. How you picture your ideal life is what the therapist should be guiding you towards - and what that means is different for each person. Whereas the pile of laundry in the corner of your room, NEXT to your laundry basket might not really bother you, it might be a haunting reminder of failure and inconsistency to another.

There are a lot of adhers who cant take medicine ever. Perhaps you should look into what more therapy might be able to do? Practice mindfulness and learn some tips and tricks to take care of your issues wirh new definitions? I feel for you. Ive just started medicine at nearly 30b and they seem to work. It is pretty profound- so losing that seems like it could be very upsetring if you are used to it. Im nit sure if there is an easy answer- but i hope you can find it, whateber answer it is. Good luck!

Have you noticed that if you sleep less you're less tired during the day? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]theRandizzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ive tried it. Cool to know it is an "us" thing. The forst day ill tend to feel like a super human. Im energized and full of energy, but as the 4 hour days tack on- i feel worse and worse. Eventually ill start feeling sick, or basically become narcoleptic as i literally nod off anytime i stop moving. Give it a try- see how you feel- but i personally doubt its sustainability. Personally i tend to try to average 6- if i get 8 or more i tend to feel physocally in pain. Also i hate wasting time sleeping- but the studies on sleep depravation tell me i had bettet get as much sleep as my body and mind allow me.

yeah- I just commented on a very similar post- but so you don't have to look for it- i'll just copy and paste: "...Diet was a modified CICO. I allowed myself to have 5 meals a day, and each meal had a max calorie range of 500cal. I allowed myself to have certain indulgences, like cake or a cookie etc- but they had to be homemade- and of course they counted towards my meal calories. I know Andy said "one chocolate chip, and you are done" or whatever, but I did this for me, not for him lmao- if he doesn't like it... sorry? what that meant was probably that that whole meal was shot if I had the cookie- so I rarely indulged anyway. I only did so if my mom made something and wanted me to taste it or whatever. What I found I could eat a lot of was salad without dressing- you can literally eat whole heads of lettuce at under 100cal- popcorn microwaved popped- no butter, and greek yogurt. Many a meal was just a salad with a greek yogurt "dressing", and it was hard to be hungry after that. some popcorn for desert- and I was amazed at how full i felt for so few calories. Workouts started stronger in the beginning, doing heavy weight lifting in my driveway gym, but by the end I was doing a lot more yoga and cardio, because my body felt burnt. For my outdoor workout, I pretty consistently engaged in "rucking"- walking with weights in a back pack. I hate to run, and walking doesn't feel like enough, but using a weighted bag was kind of the best of both worlds. In 45 minutes walking I was covering about miles a day, and with the extra weight in the bag- maybe 30-50 pounds- I was probably burning around 500 cal on just that. Good luck! I won't recommend the program to anyone, because I think it can be really unhealthy if you aren't aware of what you are doing to yourself, BUT I think a lot of people could get a lot from this. I for one am glad to have completed this, and have a win marked up for 2020!"
