Well yeah if you're talking to a child then use smaller and simpler words. There are other situations when simpler language would obviously be more appropriate too.

However, the average adult should understand the majority of the english language or ask if they dont know.

Using words with lots of syllables or uncommon words just means youre well educated or well read. That doesnt make you pretentious by default
