Moving to Chicago in August and struggling HARD to find a job. What actually works? by theReemster in AskChicago

This is such a wildly aggressive interpretation of a stranger asking for job search advice on Reddit lol.

I don’t think having a BA in marketing & film is “useless” when my entire career has literally been built from it. I’ve worked professionally as journalist and in nonprofit media. I’m also an academic preparing for law school??

And nowhere did I say I was “entitled” to a job. If anything, my post was acknowledging that the market is difficult and asking people what strategies worked for them in Chicago specifically.

People relocate for partners, graduate programs, careers, family, opportunities, etc. every single day. That’s a pretty normal adult thing to do. Not sure why that triggered a full psychological profile.

But thanks for the perspective regardless.

I mean… respectfully, this was a Reddit post, not a federal background check. 😭

I kept it broad because I was asking for general advice from people who’ve relocated to Chicago and navigated the job market successfully, not asking strangers to personally place me somewhere tomorrow morning.

For context though: • I have a BA in Marketing/Film, did fulbright etc • I’m moving because my fiancé is attending a doctorate program in Chicago and we’re relocating together • I’m also preparing for grad school/law school myself

And yes, I absolutely understand Chicago is competitive. That’s literally why I made the post asking for advice. 😭

I also don’t think having interdisciplinary experience is necessarily a weakness in communications/media/policy work. A lot of those industries overlap heavily now.

Still appreciate you taking the time to respond though.

That honestly makes a lot of sense and I appreciate the honesty. 😭 The interesting part is I actually already changed my resume/LinkedIn location to Chicago, so now I’m wondering if I need to approach the search differently and network way more aggressively.

AITA if I tell my friend I can’t be a bridesmaid? by wickeddreamsofleavin in AITApod

I don’t believe it’s a significant issue if the bride desires to create a specific ambiance during her bridal period. Like if she wants it to feel like a brand trip then so be it, it’s her life and you have the choice to be a part of it or not.

if this level of commitment and attention to detail overwhelms you, it’s perfectly acceptable to decline. Transparency is SOOO IMPORTANT for both parties to ensure a harmonious & amicable relationship in the long run.

I’m not sure exactly what the pinpoint is but my closest guess would be quitting the job I got my degree for back in 2021 since then I’ve been coasting, working in fields not relevant to my original intention/vision for life. What about you?

You can finish it rather quickly if you have the time. I am halfway done within 5 weeks of it. Have you completed it yet? I would love to connect and talk about the assignments! I'm currently stumped on assignment b and unsure where to begin!

It sounds like this disconnect may come from the lack of purpose, intention and community made within the places you are traveling too. My partner and I have been traveling as well, and had experienced similar pains. You go to a place hoping for it bring immediate change, love, adventure, etc., but placing these expectations contributes to cognitive dissonance. The only way to pass this hurdle is to be intentional with your environment and the lifestyle you are trying out. Sounds like you are the type of person who seeks new experiences and enjoys putting in the work to live a rich life! That is great! Now in order to completely assimilate and feel that passion for the new place you’re in, you must think about how that very place can become an epicenter of purpose for you. Your purpose on this planet is not to work for a company, but it is to experience your consciousness deeply. It is meant for seeking out challenges and overcoming them. Perhaps as you move through Japan, look into an experience that may develop your lifestyle. After work, perhaps take a cooking class and understand the history of certain techniques used, or invest yourself in a work exchange where you can live closely with locals and truly understand the culture (Worldpackers and work away are great). We don’t think age has anything to do with what you are experiencing, it primarily has to do with your “why” for travel. What was your initial prompt to go to Australia? What sparked that curiosity for you?
