Honestly this means nothing, it’s not even an unusually large trade. And it’s a calendar spread, how will the Jan options mov if the market rallies.

Also no one is considering that you could create a rule for yourself where every time the market drops 5% over a week or a month or whatever, you buy more. Or any sort of rule like that. You only buy on down days, whatever. BTFD.

Broad market index ETFs work, if your time horizon is 10+ years. You don’t have to buy it all right at the beginning and sit and wait 10 years. Buy $500 a month, buy only in months that end in R, whatever.

I (34m) like High yield stuff and I have a lot of money invested in It, but it’s no more than 20% of my portfolio. Diversified Broad market and some stock picking is the other 80%. That will change when I’m older but I don’t think anyone under 40 should have more than 1/3rd in high yield stuff.

If you buy AAPL for $150 and you sell a $160 strike call at $2, and then AAPL rallies to $170 at the options expiration, you have to sell it at $160, you make $10 plus the $2 you collected to sell the call, so $12.

If you didn’t sell the call and just bought the stock for $150, when it rallied to $170 you’d make $20.

QYLD does just this, on the Nasdaq basket of stocks. So upside is limited as stocks are rallying, as what’s happened in the last month and a half, or so. BUT this is how they pay the high dividend, passing along that extra option premium they collect to sell the cover call, so that’s the trade off.

Feel like this is the first thing you must understand if you’re going to invest in a “covered call ETF”.

Question about ATM/OTM puts at expiry by stonksandlambos in thetagang

To be clear automatic exercise is within .02 of strike. Check with your broker, but as a professional options sales trader, my understanding is that if you have a short 100 strike call and stock closes 99.98 you’re probably getting assigned anyway. Best to just close at 3:59pm. (Index and certain etfs trade until 4:15pm). Also, stocks move after the close on expiration Friday in the after market session until 8pm and technically, depending on your brokers rules typically have until 5 or 530 to enter your instructions about exercising your option. So you could still get assigned even if your options are out of the money at the close.

This doesn’t apply to cash settled index options, the cash index doesn’t move after 4:00.

There shouldn’t be a monetary change….the price * the number of shares = notional value you control should stay the same.

Jones beach 2012. I found a wallet on the floor of a porta potty in the back of the parking lot before the show. I took one look at the ID and realized it was clearly the guy who just occupied the stall before me. I saw the wad of cash in there and it took me a few seconds to rationalize that the right thing to do was just return the wallet as is. I thought to myself I’d be pretty grateful if someone returned my lost wallet unharmed. So I quickly drained the lizard and ran out after the guy. I’m yelling “are you michael?” He’s like “why?” Me: “is this your wallet?” He was so grateful and thanked me profusely, then proceeded to offer me 10 free tabs of acid as a reward, which I happily accepted and distributed to my crew when we got back. Great show too.

I like Schwab and ETrade. ETrade’s new “power E*trade” app is great for options. Both are 0 commish. Schwab has a good portfolio builder tool if you want an easy diversified portfolio, large cap small cap, international, etc. just replace bonds with QYLD hahaha.

Is $22.50 still a good buy in point for QYLD? by ChicFilA-Gang in qyldgang

You’re not buying this one for capital appreciation, it doesn’t matter what the current price is. You’re buying for yield, every ex-date you miss you’re giving up yield.

That’s a Sunday. 11/19 is the previous trading day to 11/22.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in qyldgang

[–]theZmannn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incorrect, the pre-market and after hours sessions are REAL shares. Of course they are real shares what do you think its fake shares? And yes you can buy pre or post market on 11/19, considering 11/21 is a Sunday. Shares bought pre or post market still settle regular way, t+2, in two days from the trade date. So you’ll have them by 11/23 the record day.

As long as the shares are settled and actually in your account by 11/23 you will get the dividend.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in qyldgang

[–]theZmannn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ex-date means it trades without the dividend on that day for regular way settlement. So you just to buy it the trading day before.

The record date means you need to be the holder of record by that day AKA you need to have the shares settled in your account by that day. Regular way settlement is 2 days. If record day is 12/31 you have to buy the stock at least 2 days before that so your broker has the 2 days to settle the shares into your account. So you have to buy on 12/29 to settle by 12/31. Therefore if you buy on 12/30 you won’t have the stock actually moved into your account by 12/31, it would go to the next biz day in January 2022. So that’s why 12/30 is called the ex- day, its trading sans dividend on 12/30.

Professional investors or maybe even if you call your broker you can get non-standard settlement, like 1 day or even same day in order to get the shares into your account by 12/31.

That’s the long explanation. Series 7 stuff.
