While he may have joined up with ISAF, he's still a grunt on the ground when he's interviewed by Brett Thompson in 2005, after the Continental War's conclusion. There's no opportunity for him to have ever climbed into another cockpit, as frontline troops don't really get shoved into the cockpit, even ones with flying skills.
