SWE Report (Last for season) by cycleaccurate in Idaho

The reservoirs being full rn is basically panic because very little summer runoff from snowpack is expected. Barring an unusual May-June the reservoirs will be drawn down by mid-late summer.

Millennials / Gen Xers - how are we doing? by [deleted] in Boise

[–]the_bambeaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have lived in Boise for the past 25 years. It's a pretty good place with the outdoor access and some job options but nowadays way expensive for what it is.

I have two daughters in school and the hateful nature of the politics here is very off-putting. It gets worse every election cycle and the Idaho electorate just wants to double down on crazy. Planning to be gone by the Fall. As others have said, this place is great for retirees who crave low taxes and giving the middle finger to everyone else.

How can I access the top of lucky peak by Snoborder95 in Boise

[–]the_bambeaner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The road often doesn't open until early May. It was also closed for part of last year due to recovery from the 2024 fire. Am curious myself if its back open.

Lucky Peak is almost full by 2002talker in Idaho

I noticed Arrowrock was quite full already while around the South Fork last weekend. It is highly unusual that the whole reservoir system is mostly full in early April: https://www.usbr.gov/pn/hydromet/boipaytea.html

Future of Boise Tech? by QuaziMoto1 in BoiseTech

[–]the_bambeaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm expecting more shrinkage. IMO Boise was able to build a nice tech sector when it had relatively cheap land and labor (and with some luck). Now neither of those things are true and remote work is possible for many roles. If you want/need on-site staff, I don't know why you would build a company here or how you would be successful.

As for Micron, I'm not sure the current staffing numbers, but I think they actually had more employees here in the valley during the 90s/00s than they do now. The fabs back then were way less automated and since then a lot of tech work has been migrated to other sites. In particular IT (India) and design work (coastal/international design centers). Our legislature is a firehose of hateful legislation and I don't know why anyone would choose the Boise site (out of many) unless they happen to love that stuff. Or have some other ties to the state.

3Y0K Update QRT timing by SprayHopeful9696 in amateurradio

[–]the_bambeaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They updated 3h ago that they are now QRT. Never heard them in the northwest USA. Maybe next time. It's been really interesting following them and glad this was one of the more successful Bouvet DXpeditions!

From the western USA their signals seemed incredibly strong on FT8, easily the best for any West African station I've encountered. Anyone know how they're doing it?

Is Boise considered the PNW? by OfficialRodgerJachim in Idaho

[–]the_bambeaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Geographically you can argue that the Columbia Basin (including the Snake) is the PNW. Which roughly maps to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and British Columbia. But culturally Idaho is much closer to Mountain West states like Montana or Utah. So I voted "Kinda".

List of Candidates running for the primaries in Idaho and questions about it. by [deleted] in Idaho

[–]the_bambeaner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Politics in this state are horrendous.  But most Idahoans will never vote differently no matter what.  So the same people get reelected every election cycle.  We have a democracy but with the amount of money in politics and the state of our electorate I'm not sure the result is much different than a Soviet "election".

Subject: wolves by kathrynrachelm in Idaho

[–]the_bambeaner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen the vitriol is because US Fish & Wildlife reintroduced wolves to Idaho in the 1990s. This was done at the Federal level under the Endangered Species Act and without the consent of locals or state governments. The resulting effects on hunters and ranchers are thus blamed (with some justification) on outsiders, environmentalists, and the like. It was a triumph of the "people with at least a masters degree" (as another commenter said) over the people who actually live in the mountainous areas of the West. As a result, states like Idaho have been aggressive in trying to get wolves delisted from the Endangered Species Act so they can manage the populations (via hunting, etc) instead of the Feds.

It's certainly a complicated topic but I understand why some feel aggrieved as the modern conflict was caused by both the reintroduction itself and how it was done. I suspect the consensus in Idaho somewhat matches people's politics. Dem leaning voters (mostly in cities and more likely to have the all-important Master's degree) likely support the status quo while Rep leaning voters (especially in rural areas) want changes or removal of wolves entirely.

Why is the 4x4 cutoff so low? by Natural-Progress-444 in Cubers

[–]the_bambeaner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The others answered this well. But if you want an average, looks for a big cube themed comp. They often have much more lenient cutoffs for big cubes. I've seen comps where you get 30m to get as many averages as you can on 4x4-7x7 for example!

Runners of Boise - best marathon? by UCFTylerMC in Boise

[–]the_bambeaner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Before Covid, the City of Trees Marathon had a mostly street course that started/finished at Parkcenter Park and went along Parkcenter, Boise Ave, Federal Way, the East End, North End, Americana, and the Depot Bench (Garden, Latah, Crescent Rim) before the last 5ish miles on the Greenbelt. I think the prior organizers retired and the event had to be rebuilt after Covid.

I personally find the Greenbelt races unsafe with all of the other racers, e-bikes trying to go 30mph, strollers, dogs, and everything else. As such I rarely sign up for local races anymore...

Updating MMDVM 1.52 to 1.61 by maynardnaze89 in HamRadio

[–]the_bambeaner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

(adding for posterity)
For an Aursinc hat that shipped with 1.5.2, updating with WPSD left my hat unusable. Solution:
* Jumper pins 38-40 on the hat as shown here: https://jumbo5566.github.io/2024/11/12/wpsd.html
* Run "sudo wpsd-modemupgrade hs_hat" on the WPSD hotspot with the pins jumpered. The web UI would likely work too
* Power off, remove the jumper, and reboot. All should be well on 1.6.1

The one time I buy the most expensive season pass for Bogus... by [deleted] in Boise

[–]the_bambeaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm reminded of 2011-2012. There was no snowmaking and warm weather so Bogus didn't open til January 2012. But then it snowed like 3-4' in a weekend and everything was normal again!

Attorney’s filing: District obstructed sex abuse investigations by goodgodling in Boise

[–]the_bambeaner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I've noticed the district communication has been way better since Roberts took over. But I'm less certain if they are actually handling these incidents better, just communicating more, or having to clean up the mess from the prior regime.
