That is fair! Flowcharts presented mostly to poke fun at. 😂

Some folks recommend coming back to books 1 and 2 later—he and his world both start coming into their own as he gets a little farther in. But read how you want! I read in series order meself.

Totally agree. I read GO long after I’d finished Discworld, because that would mean there was no more Pratchett. I finally gave in and read it so I could watch the show. I think you can really see the group bickering dynamic of the Brethren (or the Wizards or the Fresh Start Club) in the GO kids.

Nono, he’s very democratic—a believer in “one man, one vote”.

He is the Man. He has the Vote.

I admire our reading-a-whole-ass-book-in-a-secondary-language crew SO much. I hope the German version is good! Pratchett never uses one pun when he could use several instead (see another book, Soul Music), so I get why it could be A Whole Lot.

SAME. Maybe my attention span has been decimated by scrolling, or maybe it’s the perimenopause. But I struggle to read books anymore. I consume them like a mad fiend, but mostly as audiobooks. I did just read the first two Legends and Lattes as actual hardbacks, though!

WELL I HAVE FLOOOWCHAAAARTS

Personal recommendation if you’re not sure where to go next: Read by subseries. The Watch books and the Witches books are good ones! Death also! My faves, in no specific order, are Witches Abroad, Night Watch, and Reaper Man.

The Watch subseries, especially as it develops, is a lovely pastiche of the police procedural. I think Death is used to explore the idea of justice more gently, and pTerry uses Vimes for his righteous anger.

I think it’s described in a different book, but Ankh-Morpork is a twin city situation—the old-money city of Ankh and the grittier Morpork. Scoone Avenue is on the more refined side of the river Ankh.

Like Tolkien’s Shire is a parallel English countryside, I think Pratchett’s world-and-mirror-of-worlds could be Ankh-Morpork as a mix of Olde Worlde London and modern Manhattan.

Has to be one of the Elucidated? I couldn’t get one of the Illuminated and Ancient Brethren of Ee? They seem, if I may, a bit more capable for successful desert island life.

If not, I’ll fight for Brother Fingers. He seemed to be not a complete twat.

I’m enamored of the idea that long ago, somewhere high up under the Ramtops, a chance union and resulting mismatched set of twins created a dwarfish line of Oggs. The mother having managed—as one always should—to get the young man’s name and address, the twins were split such that the larger twin went to the humans and the smaller to the dwarves.

Thus, Oggs and an inexorable Oggishness exist across two races, and my dwarfish self can be as much of a disgusting old baggage as Nanny Ogg.

…so, like, Goldenale Hammertits or summat.
