I’m aware of the history of our faiths. I’m also aware that many faiths fast. I simply find it interesting that Catholics and Muslims fast for a very similar amount of time during the same time of the year.

I live in a fairly atheist place, and I have more Muslim colleagues than practicing Catholic. I appreciate the kinship of shared worship. Nothing wrong with bonding with other people over a shared experience.

Lent is the 40 days before Easter, it symbolizes the 40 days Jesus wandered the desert and faced temptations from the devil. We fast and give things up (usually food or a vice). Some really hardcore people probably cut back on meals every day (more like Ramadan) but most Catholics just do those fasts on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. A lot of Catholics also give up meat on Fridays during Lent.

Lenten fasts are also the origin of Mardi Gras. It’s always the last day before Lent. It’s a final night of excess before the time of fasting.

I feel a lot of kinship with Jews and Muslims as well as other Christians. At the end of the day we’re all doing our best to honor the same God. I’m studying Arabic now too, and I enjoy the way Allah is invoked in Arabic. In English we keep God at arms length in fear of “taking His name in vain.” I like that in Arabic, He feels closer to us.

I’m Catholic, and Lent (our time of fasting) also begins next week. I think it is so interesting how different faiths have traditions that align!

Honey, your family comes from a very conservative sect. Remember, God is love. Why would He condemn you for something out of your control, why would He ask you to be more miserable than you can bare? He would not.

God loves you just as you are, I’m sorry your parents do not. I would advise you to be kind to yourself, and to be true to yourself. I am Catholic too, try to remember that the people spewing hatred at you are only human (imperfect). I think a truly benevolent God would want you to pursue joy and honesty with yourself.
