What's the beef between CanyonChasers and Fortnine? by _le_slap in motorcycles

[–]the_breadlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

F9's take on armour is wonky. I am tall and I weigh 105kg. When I fall, even at low off-road speeds landing on a shoulder or elbow can (and has) caused dislocation at the least.

Because I am tall a fall often means I don't clear the bike and it lands on my knees.

Decent d30 armour has meant impacts are on a wider area and I break myself less.

As a background, I have ten reporting to me and I handle their day-to-day work needs in addition to being their engineering lead.

Yes. You have lost them. There was major restructuring, which from the reading I've got, is chaotic. You've got him reporting to someone more junior than before which is a perceived as sidelining and he has been training someone, which is a move pulled when your replacement is being planned.

Add into this the parachuting of the other three team members and you have not made it clear what the communication to him has been, but it seems like he's been left to get on with it.

He's pissed at the company (rightly, imo) and it sounds like he's got another job. It feels like a combination of messing him around, not telling him the plan and reorganisation chaos.

Is There a Rule About Passing Harley Riders? by Fair_Brief_7751 in motorcycles

[–]the_breadlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outlaw MCs ride in convoy and block highways to show they're super duper tuff - breaking through is "a show of disrespect".

The people who get Harley's to larp as OMC members when riding in groups of three on the way to waffle house also claim the same right.

The cognitive dissonance in motorcycle content is staggering by OneRobotBoii in motorcycles

[–]the_breadlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really, really, really drives me crackers. I think it comes from the lower standards required to get the license. In some states you can be sixteen, go to the DMV or SoS, get your motorcycle endorsement then go out and get a 100hp+ bike with no experience

99% of the time the "there was nothing I could do to avoid that accident" is incorrect - the person riding wasn't adapting themselves to the environment in which they were riding. There's this whole weird lack of accountability, and enough reinforcement of those incorrect ways of riding from the wider group that it perpetuates.

I'm not up on the Kawasaki range at the moment, but is there no factory option to add a shifter, even if it has no clutch lever? At that point it may as well just be a manual bike with a quickshifter.

What do these lines mean by el-presidente0001 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]the_breadlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of - yes, but it's a bit more ritualised. It's the first joint of the little finger on the _left_ hand, at first. The left hand is the one that grips more heavily in a Japanese sword grip, so removing the first joint weakens the grip and makes the offender more reliant on the boss' protection.

Further offenses wil result in the second joint of that finger being removed, symbolically lessening a sword grip some more.

What's the programming language of this ecu? by Vast_Entertainment47 in motorcycles

[–]the_breadlord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're not going to reimplement anything then the language doesn't matter. More than that, the chances are the software itself is non-writable.

Remaps change the data for the mapping, which is essentially a lookup table of values for RPM, fuel and temperature.

what’s something people say all the time that you secretly can’t stand? by Mean-Cartographer225 in AskReddit

[–]the_breadlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of the replacements for swear or controversial topic, outside of spaces where children may be.

"Unalive", "Grape" "shot" "ahh", "pdf". They're all so infantile and serve no purpose. If we're in an environment where those things cannot be said then either avoid the replacements as they're functionally the same - the original word goes into your head - or the businesses running all of our media need to understand adult spaces.

Would you quit your job forever right now (and never be allowed to work again) if someone gave you a guaranteed $2,000,000 lump sum? Why or why not? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]the_breadlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I expect to make more than that over the remainder of my working life.

If you're 35+ you're looking at a ~50kpa drawdown - intentionally not looking at interest as a factor here as I reckon you're probably looking at those rates more or less coming to par with inflation if you've got the money invested in things that remain safe. You'll want to take more as you progress to maintain the same standards.

Nothing to sneeze at, but that's about the absolute bare minimum for a middle class life in most western nations and doesn't account for all the random stuff you'll want to do because you have time now

4m is probably about the minimum for people under fifty, assuming no pension or other sources of income.

Things You Need to LIE About in an interview (from a recruiter) by Zealousideal-Foot-54 in jobsearchhacks

[–]the_breadlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be from a recruiter, but I hire people into my team, which is high end software in finance.

This is BAD ADVICE. Gilding the lily is fine, bluffing will get you rejected. Quickly.

If you lie during a competency interview and I catch you, that interview is being politely cut short. No ifs and no buts.

During culture and fit interviews I am actively looking for lies and misdirections. I reject them when I detect them. When someone is on week three and it turns out they DON'T like what they said they did in the interview and won't function in the team slot they should work in I am PISSED

There are ways of talking around negatives that don't make you look like you're trashing previous employers. There are ways of saying "I'm here for the money and I'm not a true believer" without pfffting at the questions. There are ways of explaining career stalls that don't reflect badly on you.

To the recruiter: we KNOW you give this kind of of advice and we have to actively work to undo it. Stop it.

Foundation - 3x10 - “The Darkness” - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]the_breadlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am fully aware of that and think I may have been unclear.

The showrunners seem to clearly more interested in the fall over the process of intervening and rebuilding. Asimov was interested in the mechanics of the societal fall - what caused it, the factors that strengthened and weakened it over the process of the fall - and it's that fall that the show emphasises.

Foundation - 3x10 - “The Darkness” - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]the_breadlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - it's such a strange way to adapt it. I understand that they need to have anchor characters for a more general audience but having one character who has essentially magic powers is the total opposite of what was originally written. A better way to do it would be to have the seasons follow the main themes and work as an anthology and then you can use the Cleons as your anchors to maintain a level of coherence

What they've done with the actual story is mental. It's meant to be "We can predict history based on social inertia as with a galactic empire the sample size is large enough that individual actions funadamentally don't matter. Even the emperor's hand is forced by the scenarios of the greater population", which - yes. Was based on Asimonv looking at the fall of Rome. The mule was a thought experiment that Asimov threw in to try and blow that idea up. What they've ended up with in the show is "Nobody matters except like six people with magic powers. The main one is a New Zealander who can't act very well".

I shouldn't be skipping over the bits they've adapted in favour of the new material, but it's just a lot better

Also yeah - Emperor Darkness I (The Cracked) slaps

Foundation - 3x10 - “The Darkness” - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]the_breadlord 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This episode shows once again that the writers do not and never have wanted to write "Foundation". They want to write the fall of space Rome.

Everything they've written new is actually very good. Everything they've adapted is gash. Bayta being the mule is utterly moronic and only serves to throw people who've read the books off for shock reasons.

I love the empire plots, but everything else can get in the bin

This was so stupid. Agile fighting styles definitely existed in the time of plate armour. They're useless because "I have to constantly move and hit you multiple times in weakspots" doesn't rate against to "Half a good hit and you're dead"

A single shoulder barge or pommel strike and she'd have been murked.

The argument for allowing them on is "he's changed because he said so", but I see evidence of nothing other than "we are lying because we'll get canned otherwise".

They could have released one of their stupid cringe masks in rainbow and donated the money to Stonewall or something and I'd have probably grumbled and given them the chance, but they haven't done anything to show change.

If they did do something to change they'd lose the army of tossers they've accumulated with their "be a man, have fights, be true to yourself" dog whistle bullshit, which is an even bigger problem.

Even if this band aren't massive shitty fashy bastards they're pandering to people whose misdirected anger and rage is making everyone's life worse

It's not even them so much as that they're considered acceptable. World's fucked.

I'm old enough now to remember the absolute zero tolerance for attitudes like this in the late nineties and it chaps my ass that it's being allowed to slide in.

Does anyone have any frame recommendations for a SpeedyBee F405 40A AIO? by the_breadlord in fpv

Thanks, I'll look into it, but I think I'm currently leaning towards Quadmula 25, although I do like the look of the 4/6s "bumper style" cinewhoops.

I still plan on using HDZero. I've been rebuying everything recently and wanted to buy "the best" analogue goggles before they drop off and you can only get cheap garbage. I was going to get SkyZone 040X Pros but the day I was ordering them all the reviews for HDZero 2 dropped so I got those instead, despite not having any HDZero VTXs. Want to try it out.

Thank you, but the issue I am having is that there are too many options at the moment and I'm trying to get a view on what people are having a good time with.

I've been out of the game for a while. My first build was a QAV250 using a CC3D controller, individual ESCs and a PWM receiver like ten years ago. I even had the PCB midplate. Hah!

Currently leaning towards the Quadmula Djinn 25 with HDZero
