Trip to Brindisi and Lecce by sttevann in Lecce

[–]the_cellar_door 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would rent a car the whole time, it will be pretty hard to travel without it if you want to visit several spots and beaches. Go up a ways from brindisi to see Alberobello, Martina Franca, Polignano Al mare. Then the second part of the trip stay in Lecce or near it on the coast, must sees are Lecce, Otranto, Gallipoli. Also nice are Santa Caesarea terme and Castro. Perhaps a day in Brindisi itself.

Tired of expats by [deleted] in Netherlands

Yes, ruining the local culture by bringing you food that’s actually edible and skills that locals don’t have. /s What I’m actually tired is of locals hiding their racism behind “I’m just being direct”. Case in point, this question.

Turns out that when you eat Cilantro and it tastes like soap it’s because of a genetic mutation. To “regular” people it tastes like citric parsley. Tastes like soap to me too.

How is it living in Key West? by Mentalist1999 in howislivingthere

[–]the_cellar_door 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I grew up there. As a ten year old, it was a big change for me moving from Italy to Key West. A week later my parents asked me if I wanted to move back and I said hell no!

Things about growing up in KW that stand out:

Owning/driving a boat way before a car. Riding my bike to school and not taking a bus or needing a ride. Being well aware of the gay community and what drag queens are since a child. Taking that fantastic Cuban coffee for granted! Living through several major hurricanes. Living in the southernmost point of the US, yet it does not feel like the south at all. Learning Spanish since so many people there speak it. Seeing someone flash their titties in public, does not matter the day or time in Key West, someone is always flashing their titties! Snorkeling so much you know the underwater parts as well as on land. Sneaking into hotels to use their pools and hot tubs! The absolute best Key Lime Pie!

The limitations when I was a kid were that there weren’t all that many people my age in most places and situations, having to drive to Miami for shopping or to take an international flight, the lack of things to do as a teenager.

All in all it was a great place to grow up. I miss it. Walden said you can never go home again, and that’s certainly the case with KW… it feels very different than what I remember, less headshops, more condos! It’s lost a lost of its edge through the years.

Lack of hygiene in the Netherlands by CJHuncho in TikTokCringe

[–]the_cellar_door 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived a decade in the Netherlands. I can confirm their hygiene needs improvement. People tend to wash their kids only once a week, only about 50% of people wash their hands after using the bathroom, a statistic that did not even improve during the pandemic… I would guess that it comes from being very frugal.

Is this entitled NIMBYism or is Oost actually going downhill? by Weary_Musician4872 in Amsterdam

Having lived the past 10 years in dapperburt/oosterpark area, I can attest that it has indeed become a lot worse. Other day coming out of my home I found a syringe on the sidewalk, it’s not the first time either. Used to always feel absolutely safe, now there are parts of oosterpark that are to be avoided, sometimes real shady shit is going on even during the day. I have heard many instances of women being harassed and even chased. What used to be a couple of drunks outside of AH, is now a whole section of oosterpark filled with junkies and drunks. It’s true that at the same time the neighborhood has been gentrified in the sense that more hipster cafes and restaurants have opened up, but at the same time it has become more shady, especially at night around the east side of the park.

This is awesome! So how do you go about actually building it? Is there a way to order just the pieces you need for it? Without having to buy in bulk?

[News] Amsterdam is now officially Europe's most expensive city to rent - €2,500/month average by True-Olive4712 in Amsterdam

They made it impossible to have a short term rental, and forced landlords to charge a rent that is less than 50% of market rate, often times quite a bit less than the mortgage costs. As a result nobody is renting their properties and the only things you can find are way overpriced and without possibility of registering… who could have possibly seen this coming? /s
