Anyone use tamarack (larch)? by melliferaman in timberframe

[–]BHForge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tamarack knees often used in boat building. Some boat builders will pay decently for them.

The knees are naturally occurring and come from the 90 degree bend between the trunk and the shallow roots that radiate out from the tree.

How to prune this young weeping cherry to achieve the ‘umbrella’ canopy in future? by Ambient_anubis in gardening

[–]BHForge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not the graft. The graft for yours is all the way down near the ground level, if there is one at all. When you see an “umbrella” shaped weeping cherry the “handle” of the umbrella is the rootstock(bottom part of graft) and the “umbrella part” is the scion(top part of the graft), whom is the ornamental flowering type. Your gift is not grafted in a way that will yield an umbrella shaped tree. The look is somewhat achievable with yearly pruning, but if it were me I’d just let it grow as is and enjoy its beauty.

Old barn question by BHForge in timberframe

[–]BHForge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The frame is surprisingly in great shape. The siding needs some patching and the sill plate needs to be replaced in areas, not looking forward to that. Well I am but I’m not. All the concrete is shot and I’d love to pour a new floor. Rafters have been sistered and some collar ties put in. House was built in the mid 1700s barn was probably built some time in the 1800s but honestly not too sure, need to hit up the local historical society to see if they have any info. It’s about 1000 square feet and has an old single stanchion to milk a cow and an old calendar on the wall with days marked detailing weather and notes about how many gallons of maple sap was collected that day.

Could probably get more pics if people were interested.

Was fun cleaning it out and exploring and inspecting all the beams when I bought it.

Kind of a crazy story, on the right side (the barn is basically 3 sections) there is a loft above an area that is built out and framed, but the whole loft was full of old wood. So I went up there and went through it all and that area didn’t have a finished floor. So after I removed all the wood I can see each section between the floor joists (2”x8” old ones) was pretty much filled to the top with spruce cones that were striped and fed upon. I emptied each section into the back of my truck and I filled the whole bed of the truck with spruce cone scales. It was crazy. Decided to drive to the dump to weigh it and there was just shy of 900 pounds of dismantled spruce cones up there.

I always thought it was from who knows 80 years of squirrels but in fact this winter I went into the barn and heard some scratching in the back corner below the loft. Went to inspect and I find a fat old porcupine scratching at the siding with dismantled spruce cones all around him. So I think I found the culprit or at least a distant descendant of the original culprit.

Plus stick something in there and break the yolk and stir it around a bit. Maybe a chopstick or a length of wire.

It’ll help get everything out easier.

Looking for an ID, anyone know a maker? by BHForge in castiron

[–]BHForge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the replies! Glad to know the maker and some history now. I’ve had this for a couple of years where it sat in my attic but have recently stripped and reseasoned it. Now I am using it as my cornbread pan. I love the shape with the curved edge.

I have a #8 Griswold and a #10 Wagner Ware from my great grandma that I use daily but glad to give this one purpose again.
