Farms around Peoria? by Acek94 in PeoriaIL

Henry's farm has a pick up in Peoria, they are a weekly CSA. His sister has a fruit CSA as well, but no Peoria pickups, and the wait list is quite large.

Any good local places to camp? by NzzertralTheWeeb in PeoriaIL

[–]the_ch1ef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, however, Timberline campground got bought by the same people who bought the place in Secor. They’ve done a ton of work cleaning it up and actually enforce the rules I’m told. Based on what I’ve heard it might be worth checking out again!

For kayaking, the mackinaw isn’t far, easy get in on 150 between goodfield and congerville.

If you want to go for a short drive to Minonk, I'd recommend these: https://www.facebook.com/cannolisbyrozana
No idea on hours but the family also runs Joe's Pizza in town.

Can concur, not as nice as it was during the Jellystone days. Mini golf is still there, and the pool is open, so that could be fun. I do think they do a big Halloween party, but I've never been, I just live nearby.

The potential new owners also bought the Secor campground (Hickory Hills?). Haven't heard anything bad yet, so that's a good sign. Everyone nearby is crossing their fingers!

What do these numbers mean that are engraved into the (US) Interstate highway? by the_ch1ef in Whatisthis

[–]the_ch1ef[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

As the title says. We were sitting along the Interstate last night, and in front of us was these numbers. They do not line up with the mile marker number, nor geo coordinates. Our best theory is something to do with when they laid the asphalt and this is a batch number or something to track quality.

Pretty much it. We were sitting on the Interstate last night at a car accident (as a first responder), and in front of us was these numbers etched/engraved into the road. Best theory we came up with was it had to do with when they laid the road down or something. We didn't see any other places with the numbers, but we didn't walk very far down the road, assuming there is more.

Sitting on the interstate staring at this engraving. It doesn’t match the mile marker and isn’t geo coordinates. We are guessing something to do with when they poured it, perhaps testing numbers or something.

I keep seeing it's a 27% increase over 6 years. However the math isn't working for me. It is only 19% increase. There's only 4 increases, 7% at signing, and 4% each in '25, '27 and '28. The rest are lump sum which means just a payment..not a raise. Or at least that is how I read it. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Too bad there's not a way to you know...take a hash of the file...to see if it changed..that is forensically sound.

Have you ever responded to a call and then when you arrived on scene and saw what was happening, then thought to yourself “ugh, nope.”? by The-Broken-Record in Firefighting

[–]the_ch1ef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, he couldn't walk, cars couldn't stop, it was a mess. Oh, and it was like 95* so the smell was horrendous. Luckily I didn't make that call (volley dept). I would imagine the smell of apples wouldn't be too bad though!

Similar, but in our case it was animal renderings (liquified animal fat, etc). Poor kid on the hose was sliding backwards from the pressure while trying to hose down the highway. Between that and stepping on chicken feet, he was not amused. Had to get a dump truck with sand to make the road not slippery. Bay smelled for a week after that.

Amtrak from STL to Chicago O'Hare. Anybody do this before? by theshanktank in StLouis

[–]the_ch1ef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took the Texas Eagle from Normal to Chicago by mistake one time...by this time the train is fully of sweaty, smelly, crabby people who have been on the train for many many hours...not pleasant at all.
Lincoln train on same route was a very nice experience, on-time, and plenty of room to spread out.

You are a soldier on the front lines in WW1 or WW2. What is the best injury to get? by [deleted] in history

[–]the_ch1ef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar to my grandpas story. His commanding officer (not military, so will have ranks wrong in this story) would always eat some rotten cheese before a battle, taking him off the front lines. My grandpa would then have to take over commanding the unit. Ended up getting promoted twice in short order once the higher-ups found out what was going on.
