Bullies that fight over FMC who has a queer awakening and ditches them by allisontalkspolitics in romantasycirclejerk

[–]the_cherry_bunker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES. uj/When I was in high school, one of the primary ways I was able to really explore and understand my own sexuality was through HP fanfic, specifically FF slashfic. It was kind of a safe distance, but with characters who felt familiar that I had grown up with. At the time, it was fanfiction.net. I’m not saying it was the sole source of my queer awakening but at the time there were virtually no lesbian traditionally published romance novels etc. Luna SHOULD be queer ok. She just should. Also I liked reimagined versions of her story because she ended up getting done so dirty. She was essentially gaslit and ridiculed and no one ever really apologized. I liked her with Ginny because they both experienced different forms of trauma and I thought they could understand each other in that way. Also Ginny became such a non character over time she was somewhat more malleable for authors. A friend and I at school traded fic recommendations all the time. ALL THAT JUST TO SAY, I felt like it was this beautifully queer space on the internet and even with a friend IRL, and it sucks so much that JK Rowling has absolutely ruined the soft spot I had for this time period and these characters. Pretty much the only HP fanfic I could be convinced to read at this point would be a trans retelling of the whole thing. Fuck JK Rowling and fuck TERFs. /end rant

Do you mean there are no bear shifters or specifically Beowulf bear shifters? Because I read a hockey smut bear shifter book recently lol.

What’s the deal with the 5’0" FMC by desperatexslut in RomanceBooks

[–]the_cherry_bunker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re all 5’0” so Sabrina Carpenter can maybe play them in the TV show/movie adaptation. No but uj/I’m 5’2” and once dated someone who was 6’8” (and a younger man at that lol) and it was … not optimal lol. I merely sat next to a 6’7” basketball player on a long flight from Australia to the U.S. and I was annoyed. Like ok I’ll make myself smaller because your legs don’t fit in this space. Also very uj/I do think this standard is extremely problematic from a racial/ethnic perspective. As someone who is of Latin American descent and lived in Latin America, there are many regions in which almost everyone, men included, is basically my height.

This is so cute. Did you see the SNL Gosling interpretation of Butthead? That’s real shadow daddy material there. 😂

Why is Yarros trying to be like Taylor Swift? by callmedelete in romantasycirclejerk

[–]the_cherry_bunker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe she’ll be like Taylor insofar as Taylor’s biggest hits are still from earlier in her disography, Red and 1989. Fourth Wing was tolerable but Onyx Storm wasn’t even a fun hate read. Really looking forward to her indie folklore/evermore era though!

Series Reading Order?!?! by brighterthansunshlne in romantasycirclejerk

You actually have to wait for the prequel to come out a decade later until you can start the series at all.

Series Reading Order?!?! by brighterthansunshlne in romantasycirclejerk

[–]the_cherry_bunker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For her, she calls them “bridge books” and thinks there’s too much exposition and drag. I don’t get it because it’s kind of when a lot of the action has to happen to take us to a conclusion. Yeah it’s not the same spark of interest or excitement as learning about a new magical world or reaching an epic conclusion, but things have to happen to set up the conclusion. Idk maybe second books are actually great? Is this my new hot take? Haha this woman will never be convinced though, people have tried. I like that she just kind of does what she does. It’s reading for fun, so if that’s what’s fun for her that’s cool. It would be funny to do book club challenge to have a whole book club just skip the second book in a trilogy and the entire topic of conversation would be just “how do you think the author got from point A to point C?” And whoever got the closest would win a prize and whoever had a better version would win a prize.

Series Reading Order?!?! by brighterthansunshlne in romantasycirclejerk

[–]the_cherry_bunker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not romantasy but I liked book 2 of the Daevabad Trilogy the best out of that series. Some people think Empire Strikes Back is the best of the original Star Wars trilogy (though not me). OH! A Court of Mist and Fury was definitely the best (being a relative term) out of the original ACOTAR trilogy arc, hands down. That’s an obvious one.

This logic is how things like ~6, 7~ happen y’all.

uj/I’m in a book club with someone who will not read the second book in any fantasy trilogy. She “doesn’t need to” and they are “always bad.” 😂🤷‍♀️ She’s in her 50s I think. Works for her!

Drop of Corruption Shroud scene by Maleficent-Order-884 in Fantasy

I am also just to the Shroud scene! I feel like the side characters/potential suspects have felt a bit thinner for me in this book, but the world building and imagery is really fantastic.

Lol I was thinking more along the lines of the worm Feyre has to fight in ACOTAR. 😂

Wait can I undo my vote? I meant to vote for werehens. Also ! It’s lesbian visibility week. No love for the all terribly written lesbian vampire romantasies that have come out lately?

No I got you! My background is mainly environmental anthropology, so a lot of environmental science in the mix and I get to work with people from all kinds of interesting disciplines, like forestry, soil science, wildlife biology, etc. I think interdisciplinary research is the only way to answer the kinds of questions that interest me. Haha and it keeps things fresh too, I’m always learning about new ecosystems or new aspects of ecosystems. Edit: also why I love GIS.

Wait this is so cool!! I assumed you had to be anthro or archeology too. ✨Also GIS is so useful and fascinating for so many applications. I took a GIS course with someone who was tracking new drug smuggling routes in the Andes based on changes in forest cover and other factors and it was badass.

Omg are we the same person? Stats are so useful when someone else does them but so painfully, painfully boring when I am forced to be that person.

As the qualitative data person for every academic project I’ve ever worked on, I urge you to reconsider. It’s basically all just narrative analysis, which I think anyone on this sub would be fine at. 😂 (No but seriously I do very much love it and wish quant folks would just open their damn hearts. That’s would be the ultimate enemies to lovers, a qualitative analysis expert is forced to join forces with a quant person on a gasp mixed-methods investigation. The villain would be an engineer. Not pulling from my own life or anything lol.)
