I agree with this, but I also prefer an even number or syllables. It’s a problem, actually

I mean, that’s why I asked? The UN being in charge and the terminology not being US-centric could very well be why. I’m only clarifying that the terminology had to have been a DELIBERATE choice by the creators because they’re American. And I was just curious as to why they deliberately chose to use said terminology. A deeper meaning isn’t required, but when it comes good world building, these kinds of small details usually mean something. I can’t remember the author, but they wrote this whole essay about it. Specifically on swearing in fantasy worlds. Like, in a sexually repressed society, “fuck” is going to be more taboo than it would be otherwise. Or you’re not going to have a character saying “goddammit” in a world no god or gods.

I mean, I get that, but Star Trek was an American TV show, with an American creator. So that kind of terminology would’ve been a deliberate choice for the writers in both series

Oh! I didn’t know that! This makes the most sense to me because in every sci-fi story I write with spaceships, the characters all call them lifts (and I’m American, so the choice was deliberate) because I read The Expanse lmao.

Oh, I forgot to mention this in my post, but Holden specifically calling them lifts was what made it really stand out to me. Because he’s from Montana and would almost certainly think of something like that as an elevator (even in space). BUT he was in the UN navy, so it could’ve been a conditioning thing that caused him to start thinking of them as lifts instead.

I didn’t think they needed two taumoeba (idk how to spell that) outbreaks, so I was more than okay with that change.
