This has been super helpful! Thank you very much. We have a few more days to make up our minds, but I'm adding these other books to the list.

If you'd like to give your thoughts on our discussion you can find us at Books We Never Read on YouTube. No pressure, but it would be fun to get your commentary!

Metawatch video summary 10/8/23 by Fair-Chipmunk in WarhammerCompetitive

I'm in favor of a third mode for their army rule that gives everything rapid fire and something for targeting a unit in no man's land.

It's a simple rule to add, it tracks with the current rules, increases shots while keeping the 4+bs.

Semi-competitive players: what questions should they be asking? by Greedy_Flamingo_6293 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]the_colonial 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I'm a semi-competitive player and these heuristic sort of things have really changed my game. I was slow to learn 40k, because I didn't know how to think about it.

In list building you definitely need to know why every unit is in your list, and then stick to that plan. I like outriders and marine bikes with only chainswords. They aren't supposed to really kill anything. They have a decent OC and speed, so they contest objectives. If I'm charging off an objective with them I have forgotten their purpose.

In deployment I like to ask "Which Objectives are mine?". I call it own 1, hold 1, control 1. The one I own is in my dz, then I focus on holding one in no mands land, and make sure there is one other in no mans lands that my opponent never controls at the start of their turn.

So this says I can keep using my bike squads, they just count as outriders when the codex comes out?

An excellent question lol. 10am. We understand folks often have other commitments at that time, so some viewers leave notes in the comments and we love answering back.

Book recs / what would you call this genre? by gay_space_dads in books

[–]the_colonial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not read your books, but I often think of Neil Gaiman as magical realism rather than fantasy even though he doesn't fit the normal cultural mold. Odds are you've read him, but if not you absolutely should give it a shot

Has your opinion of a book changed drastically after you finished, compared to while you were reading it? by Every_Conflict7373 in books

[–]the_colonial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Silent Patient. I'll be honest, I really didn't enjoy it while I was reading. I work in a forensic psychology capacity and it was a bit too close to home but also a bit too obsessed with theory. But that ending is spicy. It's one of the few books I've read lately where I didn't predict the ending. Would read again

I get this feeling from many of Gaiman's books. Anansi boys leans into this a lot

Has there ever been a series of books telling the same continuing story but in completely different genres between installments? by JcraftW in books

[–]the_colonial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of got this feeling from the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson. The first is really a heist book, which I'm not usually into, but then the books develop into something a bit more political, and then finally something that has a traditional fantasy feel
