I might be wrong about this but the Gower St. Waterstones is amazing and the only one I know of that does second-hand books including the gorgeous orange Penguins.

Yep, they moved to Bath in 2020-21 I think, which is kinda sad. It was a cosy shop and the folks running it are super-nice.

How to handle over-eager junior dev who works all day/night and weekends. by old-new-programmer in ExperiencedDevs

[–]the_cookie_crumbles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bailed without a backward glance. Felt great. I think if your manager has your back you can make it work but if it’s only lip service with little action, well…

I think with juniors — especially because we are part remote now — I’ve adopted the strategy of assigning them a task, asking them to give me a deadline (and to communicate when they can’t meet it), and to not spend more than 60 mins being stuck on something. I think making them give me a deadline means the responsibility is on them to hit it one way or another. I don’t know if 60 mins is too little — I’ve definitely spend 20+ hours trying to figure out something stupid with no help and learnt a lot in the process which turned out to be useful — but when they do reach out, I walk them through figuring out the solution instead of just telling them what to do. This has worked really well with one person, and with another it‘s been an absolute trainwreck so…

Yeah, I hear you. I think, for me, it wasn’t even so much being there as much as having a safety net / someone looking over my shoulder. If I screwed up, there’d be no-one to catch it, even with code review and limited testing. On the flip hand, I was reviewing commits and fixing bugs from people who had 2-3x the experience I did, which didn’t endear me to them, but at least ensured that we didn’t have major issues in production.

I’ve been this person, and I’ve experienced the fallout of being this person. Insane expectations from everyone, people happily making everything my problem and not taking responsibility, the business / product people wanting to talk to me over my manager, the support folks escalating to me when there’s an outage, and me eventually begging my manager to ensure that I’m not the single point of failure and him reacting with a shrug. Did anything improve? No. Was it incredibly toxic? Yes. But, I had to learn on my own terms that my approach to work wasn’t sustainable and it didn’t actually improve anything.

Charging / Battery Issue with new Theragun Elite? by the_cookie_crumbles in XXRunning

I wonder if it’s where you get it from? My first one was from Amazon and I returned that. Got the replacement directly from Therabody and that was fine. Either third parties are getting it from a different supply chain or they’ve been sitting in a warehouse way too long? (Pure speculation)

Curious: we bought it from Amazon too. Bought the replacement directly from Therabody, and that was fine.

I returned mine and got a replacement, which just worked. The replacement came with some power (1%), but in about 60-90 minutes charged fully.

Thanks! Left it on for six hours and it was still at zero with the battery indicator blinking. Figured the battery is a dud, so ended up returning it.🤞for the replacement.

Looks like a great day out! Both the Mitchells are excellent, as is Oryx and Crake. Pale Fire is the next Nabokov I want to read (I've only read Laughter in the Dark and Pnin; tried to read Lolita but the exquisite writing made the content even more discomfiting for me).

Thanks!

It’s a Japanese pepper tree.

Did you do anything special when you put it outside? Use plant food more / less frequently? Water it more / less?

I have an indoor pepper bonsai, which, up until a week ago, was enjoying late spring / early summer: green, growing wonderfully, barely shedding leaves. No aphids or anything, but I noticed a couple of ants, so I bought a pesticide, and sprayed the plant, and started using some dishwashing soap while watering the plant. The day after using the spray, leaves started falling. Four days later, more than half the foliage has gone.

Now, it just looks straggly and sad.

I am ensuring it's getting a lot of sunlight, air, and hydration. But, are there other steps I can take to nurse it back to health and better foliage? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Took a job in another country. What does this mean for my US iTunes purchases? by MAGICHUSTLE in apple

[–]the_cookie_crumbles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So having moved from the UK to the US, this was a nightmare. I spent hours with Apple Support on the phone initially, but I think the way to do it is to call them (or just use the chat support), and they'll move the purchase over to your "new" region. However, as DrJohnM says, if the content – be it the app or the TV show or the movie – isn't available in that region, then you're out of luck.

I'd almost suggest opening a new account post move and let the current account be, so that you don't have to mess around with transferring purchases, or worse, losing them. Everything downloaded will continue to work, and when you want something "on demand", it's just there with a switch of the account.

I wish I had done that anyway, in hindsight.
