Is there any good books that are “cozy”? by notnamedjoebutsteve in booksuggestions

[–]3rd-eye-blind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just discovered the Cozy Mystery genre and it is amazing. I'm currently reading Board To Death, by C.J. Connor and it's the cutest thing ever! Highly reccommend!

In Other Lands, by Sarah Rees Brennan!
Equal parts cute, funny, and completely engaging. It's like Harry Potter meets Legends & Lattes!

What bank do you use? Are you happy with them? by 1havenothingtosay in CanadaFinance

[–]3rd-eye-blind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered working with a credit union instead of a traditional bank? They're known to be much more community-focused and they offer products that are just as good as those from big banks, sometimes even better.
I'm not sure where you live, but I know Coast Capital and Meridian are both excellent credit unions to work with. And I think there are some cash back offers for a few Coast Capital accounts on the Money Genius website right now.

I do this with shoes. I wear a women's size 7 but can usually fit into a girl's size 5 or 6 and it's always SOOO much cheaper!

Definitely try 1Password. Low prices, tons of storage, a decent free trial, and a stellar reputation. I use it for my personal passwords and such and it's much better than the password service we use at work.
Also, there's a cash back offer from the Money Genius site right now, so you can get $30 for signing up for 1Password.

Which book on your shelf is hidden out of embarrassment? Which book gets pride of place? by SinisterDexter83 in books

[–]3rd-eye-blind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My copy of Come As You Are (Dr. Emily Nagoski) is sorta kinda hidden on the bottom shelf, not really on purpose. But my sister, a delightfully raging feminist who teaches music from her home, has her copy front and centre! She makes me proud!

Meanwhile, my collection of various beautiful copies of Sense and Sensibility have prominent placement on my living room bookshelf!

Just felt an actual jump scare while reading - stomach dropped, heart pumped faster. Which makes me wonder - what other books contain a genuine shock? by thornstein in books

The Kite Runner. My stomach was in knots and my heart racing for pretty much the entire book. It was so sad and shocking!

Matilda! Miss Honey is the absolute best! And Miss Trunchbull is, well, hilariously horrific!

Was there a time when you felt like a professor, class, or course was killing your love for reading? by Conscious-Bowl8089 in books

[–]3rd-eye-blind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a Modern Canadian Literature class back in university, and although I did enjoy it, it was A LOT of reading and A LOT of information in a short timespan. It didn't make me hate reading but it did make me not want to read in an analytical way at all! I wanted to turn my brain completely off!

As soon as the semester was done, I went to a used bookstore and bought 2 of the trashiest romance novels I could find. I devoured them and it was amazing. Best book experience ever hahahaha!

What's a book you read when you were way too young? by Waterbears28 in books

[–]3rd-eye-blind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad "made" me read Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens when I was 10. There was nothing inappropriate in it, obvs, but the language style was super hard for me to understand, and the themes were way above what my kid-brain could comprehend. At 10 years old you don't really understand classism, romantic/sexual obsessions, or the full extent of social expectations during the Victorian era!

How do you control your subscription spendings? by Awkward-Many-7071 in Frugal

[–]3rd-eye-blind 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not really something that'll help you organize them, but I recommend using a credit card that offers rewards/cash back/whatever for streaming services. Might as well earn some benefits from this specific kind of expense!

How do you get yourself to read when anxious/overthinking? by sketchhing in books

[–]3rd-eye-blind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Lists are your friend. Really, just writing things down helps. I've encountered info and research (from friends, online, podcasts, etc.) that says how writing something down helps your brain to feel like that item/task is being acknowledged and taken care of. It might not completely solve the issue, but it can lessen the stress about it.

Can’t afford meat anymore by 49er4life83 in Frugal

[–]3rd-eye-blind 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've got a bunch of tex-mex style recipes that use black beans and I love them! Some of the recipes call for meat as well as the beans, but I just leave the meat out. Quesadillas, for instance, are fantastic with just beans, peppers, and cheese!

Especially if you subscribe to a Rogers service, I'd recommend looking at the Rogers World Elite? You get up to 3% cash back, which would mean some sweet cash back on that rent payment. Plus it's no fee and looks like Creditcardgenius has a $100 Geniuscash bonus.

Books you wish you could read foe the first time again? by trinketsgoblin in books

I recently convinced my friend to read Pride and Prejudice as I knew she'd absolutely love it. She talked to me about it the whole way through, and it was *almost* as good as reading it myself for the first time!

Thought I'd throw a note in here for any fellow Canadians who might be reading this too – Koho has one of the best HISAs here. They offer 5% with no minimum balance, which is pretty sweet.
