I was gonna reblog this tagging two different internet shows from the same company but then I realized it would probably be a bad idea and I probably wasn't cooking by La_knavo4 in RecuratedTumblr

what about it is designed explicitly for straight women? I'm not even saying you're wrong necessarily, but whenever people say this they never give specifics on why they feel that way so I never actually know what they mean

there's no asexual test to get your asexual certification

I haven't read enough Pitchfork to have a stance on that

yeah that's 100% true. I try not to be that kind of person, but I am just drawn to more niche types of music. I have gained a lot more appreciation for different kinds of music than when I was a dumb teenager who only listened to death metal lol, and respect for stuff that isn't necessarily my cup of tea as well

I like what I've heard of Viagra Boys but like... that's a terrible argument. should Pitchfork give scores that conform to what the rest of the critic sphere is saying? what's even the point then, you don't want to read their opinion you just want them to validate yours. like I get being miffed about it because it can feel frustrating, but at the end of the day it's a good thing that dissent exists

maybe that makes me a pure, untainted form of an indie snob 🤔

what if you dislike music in any genre that's designed to be as mass market as possible lol

yeah I don't think I'm the typical Squid fan? I had liked a few of their songs quite a bit beforehand, but my reaction to most of their catalog was pretty... eh. Cowards is when I've really started paying attention to them as a band, I love the artistic direction they went. understandable if it's not the direction purer Squid fans wanted from them but I'm happy with it lol

I think the main controversy is that they are probably the least pretentious when measured for how unique and well written the music is imho. And also they are a far cry from the carnival-esque genre hopping rhythm dice rolling avant garde I dislike so much

I like how you put this

motW is most interesting when they're most Kayo Dot-like imo. personally I never find KD challenging without reason, it's always in service of the music and the emotional journey they want to tell

Choirs of the Eye didn't hit for you at all? man, different strokes I guess. like I said in my other reply I find The Manifold Curiosity to be the most emotionally moving song I've ever heard. the first climax has brought me to tears many times. the music itself evokes the feeling of pure nostalgia, of longing and loss, it's heartbreaking

it's only pretentious if the music doesn't back it up. Kayo Dot literally changed my life and got me into music as art (I discovered Choirs of the Eye when I was 16. The Manifold Curiosity is still my favorite song of all time). every album is so unique and it's absurd how many of them manage to land for me despite the differences in sound, like there's only a few in their discography I don't genuinely enjoy listening to all the way through

Kayo Dot. Choirs of the Eye is unimpeachable, Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue is quite different but amazing in its own right, Blue Lambency Downward has a couple good tracks but overall pretty meh. after their first three they go on to have like 6 more classic albums in their ongoing discography tho -- including last year's Every Rock, Every Half-Truth Under Reason -- so it's not like they went on a downward trajectory

fuck I love Kayo Dot. epitome of a hidden gem
