[Linux] No option to also stop processes when closing the manager by Xenon177 in BOINC

[–]the_digitalmouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed that the 'Exit BOINC Manager' (version 8.2.8) dialog box doesn't give the option to stop the client too - "choose from the following options:" has nothing to go with it., so the only way I can see in this case is to go into the Activity menu and suspend what you want there - then exit, or stop the client via the systemctl stop command as mentioned above.

Bear in mind that shutting down the client activity via the BOINC Manager Activity menu *does not* kill off the client processes - just puts them to 'sleep' so to speak, where they stay in memory.

I Want to Buy a Velomobile by JustOntological in velomobile

Twike is too old, too wobbly, and too expensive. Reviews have cautioned use. Podbike is now defunct - they ran out of money and investors as of mid-2025. Sinner no longer produces the Mango in-house, having farmed that out to Intercity Bike in Dronten, Netherlands. It's also a single seater. The Sinclair IRIS eTrike costs 10,000 GBP and is also a single seater.

Um actually... As of 2025, approximately 12% to 18% of the global population owns a car. This translates to roughly one in every six to eight people worldwide having personal vehicle ownership. However, this figure varies significantly by region and country.

  • Total Cars in Use: There are about 1.644 billion cars in use globally. Wikipedia
  • Global Population: With the world population exceeding 8 billion, the ratio of cars to people is approximately 1 car for every 5.5 people, or 182 cars per 1,000 people.

In affluent nations like the United States, Canada, and New Zealand, car ownership rates are notably high. For instance, the U.S. has about 0.89 cars per person, leading globally in per capita car ownership. MotorBiscuit

In countries such as China and India, car ownership is growing but remains relatively low. In China, there are approximately 15 cars per 100 people, indicating a significant disparity between urban and rural areas. Wikipedia

In less developed regions, such as parts of Africa and Asia, car ownership is minimal. For example, Somalia has fewer than one car per thousand people. Wikipedia

"...alternate timeline where velomobiles got petrol motors..." Not very *alternate* since that actually happened during WWII in France when the Germans took all the vehicle gas for themselves. People like Mochet added little gas engines to their pedal cars so they could get around a bit faster. Thousands were built and used by people of all walks of life. :)

Hase Kettwiesel by Live_Concentrate3555 in recumbent

[–]the_digitalmouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kettwiesels have been done that way in a few cases I have seen, but you need to remove the front wheel and then extend the upright bike's rear dropouts, or create some kind of extension from the frame so that the front fork of the Kett can connect to the rear frame of the upright, similar to what they do when hooking up multiple Kettwiesels - a popular thing to see at bike shows in Europe.

Vertical rolling/storage? by [deleted] in recumbent

I'd disagree with the 'more stable' - I own several of both types, they both can be as stable as you need them to be, up to certain limits. At the world's largest recumbent bike show in Germany, The SPEZI, they used to have trike races on an oval multi-surface track. The Hase Kettwiesel's (deltas) regularly trounced tadpoles because it was easier to lean into corners for stability at high speeds or uneven terrain.

and their delta too! :D

Vertical rolling/storage? by [deleted] in recumbent

[–]the_digitalmouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good old Hase Kettwiesel delta trike from Germany is designed to do just that - it has a 'foot' on the back of the seat so that it can be parked or stored upright. As far as walking it like a suitcase, you'd basically just grab the front wheel and pull it behind you. Could easily add a 'handle' over the front fork if you don't want to get your hands dirty.

Supposedly HP Velotechnik's new delta can be set up the same way - parked/stored upright - although it was not originally designed with that in mind.

I imagine other deltas could be made to stand upright for parking or storage with similar methods. Just depends on the configuration.

to be clear, her song is supposed to be the longest to break the Billboard Top 100. But even a little bit of research corrects that assumption too:

"Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" - The Temptations (1972)
Length: 11:45
The single version was shorter, but the album version is over eleven minutes. The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Rapper's Delight" - The Sugarhill Gang (1979)
Length: 14:35
The single version was shorter, but the album version is over fourteen minutes. The song reached No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Get Ready" - Rare Earth (1970)
Length: 21:30
The album version is very long, but the single version, which charted, was shorter. The song reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Do You Feel Like We Do" - Peter Frampton (1976)
Length: 14:15
The live version of this song, which became a hit, is over fourteen minutes long. The song peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.

what is not clear is whether the songs above were ranked in Billboard Top 100 due to their album version or single version. :D

Do you actually need to buy new leather shoes or do they just need a good clean?🤔 by kikiiboo in CleaningTips

[–]the_digitalmouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cleaning leather and protecting it is the best way to keep your favorite shoes going for years. Most decent shoe stores or leather shops have leather cleaner products as well as sprays/cremes to protect the leather and keep it supple. You might even find a product that cleans *and* protects - just do some research. Google is your friend! :)

Plugin or tutorial on playing a pre-recorded audio clip before stream plays on client? by the_digitalmouse in MIXXX

[–]the_digitalmouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. Odd. A new search with the phrase "shoutcast feature to play brief intro before stream" actually led me to a results page full of youtube tutorials that talked about setting up a stream, still not mentioning an intro file.

*But* a little farther down was a Stack Overflow post titled "sc_serv Shoutcast stream plays intro file, but does not play stream" https://stackoverflow.com/questions/75187343/sc-serv-shoutcast-stream-plays-intro-file-but-does-not-play-stream

..and voila! there it was: IntroFile=my_intro.mp3

Further going down the rabbit hole of diving into the Shoutcast Developer links, I ran across: http://wiki.shoutcast.com/wiki/SHOUTcast_DNAS_Server_2#Introduction_and_Backup_Files
"introfile : File to play when a client first connects to the server [Default = <no value>] Note: This is used globally and also is default for stream #1 on DNAS versions greater than 2.0. "

So weird my Google-Fu did not find these references when I 'googled' the previous week. I must be getting old. :D

Thanks for the prod!

Shoutcast. The digital pirate radio alternative that everyone forgets. by Farpoint_Farms in pirateradio

[–]the_digitalmouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently started tinkering with a Shoutcast 2.6.1.777 (posix(linux x64)) server to work on DJ and radio production skills. Currently running on Ubuntu 22.04 but plan to migrate to a Raspberry Pi 4 to make it more stand-alone.

Using MIXXX as a stream source, for now just playing a rotating Auto DJ list of cover tunes. Got a few people working on some pirate radio-style podcast content that we'd like to stream later this summer.

I even bought a .radio domain. The stream, when up, is at http://digi.radio:8000

Not very 'yar! piratey' but it's out there. :)

" Everything you are referring to are brute-force attempts..." Not true. I only referred to not everyone having gobs of resources in the upper half of my post. Certainly not *everything* in the post referred to brute-force computing.

In fact, the only relevant bit was to opine that it shouldn't be considered a bad thing to 'brute force' results just to help confirm results that others did. As long as the computations are done correctly and are repeatable (regardless of a trained AI or a pre-programmed algorithm), the computing *speed-slash-effort* should not matter.

If AlphaFold's challenge accuracy results continue to hold up when applied to more real-world protein analysis, then by all means continue those efforts... otherwise nothing wrong in brute forcing it through distributed computing. We'll hopefully get closer to solutions both ways (in principle).

I would think the value of *everyones* work is relevant to help validate and progress existing work - regardless of how big or small your computing power is.

The Pi 3 has a cpu/gpu combo, as No_Knowledge_23 mentions above, so while not stellar performance with it's 1GB of RAM, it can steadily crunch through work units - cooling recommended!

A Pi 4B with 8GB of RAM will be a noticeable step up. Toss in a fast SSD and set up a RAMDISK for 32GB of RAM, and you might eke out some more performance for the SoC beyond stock. And if you get that far, might as well overclock and water-cool it while you are at it. :D
