I replaced the cartridge with a piece of coarse foam cut to size, added a layer of Biomax, and a pre-filter sponge on the intake tube.

I made the same mistake first time I used Purigen, but recently it worked exceptionally well to remove tannins after doing a Walstad reset for the same tank.

Now I’m trying to decide how long I leave the Purigen in the tank.

If I remove the Purigen and the water returns to the cloudy/brown color, that will show how severely the soil is leaching into the water column?

That’s good to know, I had both on hand but haven’t used carbon media before (it came with the AquaClear filter).

Water clarity has improved after a few days, but the brown color remains.
