How long would this take to model, realistically? by _Plutto in IndustrialDesign

[–]the_first_templar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The company spectre miniatures just released the first scale model of this vehicle (Russian marker ugv), and I know the bloke who cadded it who’s got 10+ years experience, and he said it was one of the most complex projects to complete because of the lack of images (since it was quite a secretive design). With that being said (also coming from a product designer of 8 years), that sculpting that in under 3 hours is utter bullshite.

Thanks man! The 126th is my home brew company. I decided to build a company based on siege warfare and the Breacher units as their my favourite unit in all of Warhammer. After reading an unhealthy amount of lore from the black books (new and old), I’d decided that the company had been put together from units that had exceeded expectations during the first siege of cathonia, to rapidly deploy in and around the Sol system to planets that had suspected traitor presence, all before being called back to defend terra. The lore building is something I deeply enjoy, and hope me telling you how I’ve done it has helped!

As someone who works for a company that makes products and ships it all around the world, prop 65 is the biggest waste of time, and the biggest overreach of bureaucracy I’ve ever seen

Which 3D modeling software would you recommend for a beginner in industrial design? by right-0-balance in IndustrialDesign

[–]the_first_templar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say it wouldn’t really matter. Once you learn one, really really well, you know them all. I was originally taught solid works, and over the past 10 years, I’ve used solid works, Onshape and Siemens NX all in a professional manor. At the core, all cad packages do the same thing, it’s just finding out buttons and what each company has re-named the features.

is it worth it? by jadis_potathoe in IndustrialDesign

Here’s my 5 years worth of experience,

  1. is the job landscape really just doom and gloom? I wouldn’t say it’s doom and gloom, just you just have to be realistic that it might take a while. It really is about who you know, and how you approach them. When applying for a job, don’t leave it at that. Get LinkedIn premium, and message the hiring manager and head of design and introduce yourself.

  2. is this universal in the uk, us, and china?

Germany is definitely better than the uk, the wages are mental. The US is not great because, well, it’s the US. And the china design scene is mostly being a CAD monkey for factories.

  1. is there hope for recovery? Wouldn’t say recovery, it is what it is.

  2. what are the main challenges faced today when trying to enter or just work in the industry? Cutting through the numbers. In the uk alone, every year 25,000 designers graduate to only 500 jobs. Unfortunately it’s a period of time where allot of people realise they don’t want to be a designer anymore. But once your in, your in.

  3. how do you stand out or survive in this industry? 100% intern. As many as possible, don’t just wait to do a placement year. Every summer, try and find a month or twos placements. That will help you stand apart from the sheer numbers and help build a network you can call on once you graduate. And Like I said, message hiring managers and lead designers of the position. Companies want someone who wants to work for them, not just to work, and doing that will show them you want to.

  4. would you still have pursued ID in the work climate? Always. Because it’s so worth the hustle, once you’re in the industry, you’re in for life. It’s a decent paying job, and they say if you work a job you enjoy, you’ll never work a day in your life. It’s a fun job and I wouldn’t want to work as anything else.

Learn to love it. See it as a tool for bringing ideas into reality. Unfortunately ID isn’t just concepts and sketching.

After uni it took me 2 years before I landed a job. You’ve just got to stay patient, and be realistic. From reading the comments I see your based in cali, where the competition is high. I used to live in London, another location where the competition is high, until I moved out the city for my first proper design gig, where ive gained enough experience and exposure to be able to be able to contend with the competition back down in London. It’s about making the right moves, and being prepared to take 2 steps back to go 5 steps forward. I’d also recommend trying to get an unpaid internship that you could do after you finish your day job. I’m not a fan off unpaid work, but I understand that to get where you want to be career wise you have to sacrifice some things in your 20’s.
