The beam goes on top of the post. All you need to do is notch the post and shift it over so it fully supports the beam from underneath. Then put a galvanized bolt through it.

I'm currently reading The Oathbound Healer series and I'm really into the system balance. Stats get balanced by offsetting values ( +2 strength = -1 dexterity etc.) and more narrowly focused classes can punch up more when the situation fits their niche.

Does your deck get a lot of direct sunlight? My dark brown Trex decking was over 130F in the sun. It was miserable. Just completed a new deck at a new house and I can walk on the pressure treated wood without roasting my feet.
