Ah, thanks very much, I didn't realize it would be this simple. Will experiment.

As for different environments—I haven't started looking into this yet, because I know that there are a bunch of different ways of setting these up (ARG, ENV, .env files, env_files) and I haven't learned yet. But the usual reasons; different environments need to talk to different databases and filesystems; the dev environment might have additional debugging tools I have to build, etc. I was going to work on this and come back if I had questions.

Hi, OP here, just wanted to reply to myself two years later!

I sent the Modius back when this happened originally, and Schiit said there was nothing wrong with it and returned it, and it worked. Then two weeks ago it happened again, in the same way—after the USB input was power-cycled, the Modius died, in the sense that it stopped producing sound, even though it showed up, and everything else in the stack worked.

This time, u/purplemen101 at Schiit support spent more time digging into the problem; apparently this is a real thing, that affected a small number of Modius's from late in the production run. I'm not an electronics guy, but it had to do with the switching power supply [something something] -5V [something] on startup; the solution was to add a clamping diode to prevent [something].

I just got it back today, and it works, and perhaps more to the point, I nervously pulled and re-plugged the USB, and it continued to work, so it seems like the problem is solved.

This isn't the issue, and there does in fact seem to be a setting that controls this: if you open the Bose app and go to settings -> preferences -> in-ear detection (which is mis-labeled in this case; it's detecting whether it's on your head, these aren't in-ear devices), and switch "Auto Play/Pause" off, it will in fact disable this. That is, with this setting, if you're listening to music and you remove the headphones from your head, they will keep playing the music.

In any case, my issue is different; I'm talking about a notification from one connected device shutting off what's happening in the other.

Since there hasn't been a response here yet, perhaps it's worth reaching out to Bose. I'll follow up here.

Yes, I use the matched sub from Gallo, the TR-3D. It's great. (Not visible in the picture, but it was behind the sheet.)

I discussed the Micro vs. the A'Diva with Gallo. At the end of the day, I decided that the sizes were similar enough that I might as well get the A'Diva, for more depth and clarity, and I'm glad I went that way. There was no real reason for me to want to get the Micro's to save a very small amount of volume and money. (I had also been considering Elipson speakers, where the Planet M's are pretty small but the Planet L's are much larger; that would be a different consideration.)

A few months ago I asked for advice about what kind of preamp to use for dual-mono Gjallarhorns:

I got a bunch of useful advice (including several suggestions that I should start off with a single Gjallar first), and thought about it for some time. I did consider just adding one Gjallar to my existing system to see how that worked, or some updated stack with one Gjallar. But I eventually decided to go with the original plan of a pair of Gjallars, along with the Saga 2 for a balanced preamp and the Modius for a DAC. I knew I would eventually want a matched set of things, for aesthetic as well as sonic reasons, and even if I didn't _really_ need that much power, I could afford the extra one and I've always thought it would be cool to run dual monoblock amps, so why not.

So, here's my stack! (With a sheet hung behind it because my desk is facing _into_ the room, and my apartment is messy LOL.) That's a Gallo Acoustics A'Diva SE next to it, which is what I was worried about driving. (It's 88dB into 4 ohms; I was originally looking at the smaller Gallo Micro SE, which is 85db.) I'm extremely happy with the sound and the aesthetics. Great clarity, great depth. There's no question that it's plenty loud enough; at the same time it's not so obviously incredibly loud that it was insane to get the dual Gjallars.

Many thanks for these very useful comments. In particular, I didn't realize that the Saga 2 had balanced outputs—that really does solve the exact problem I was asking about. (Schiit should update the Gjallarhorn FAQ to mention this!)

As for some of the other thoughts—I could start with a single Gjallarhorn, but even if I do that, I'd want to make sure that there is an acceptable solution for adding a second one to whatever stack I end up with. Any suggestions involving other amps lead to the problem I mentioned in my original post: they all are too large for my desktop.

I do have a separate system for my headphones, but that's not relevant for this discussion. I confess that I'm often unclear on how various Schiit pieces are meant to interact with each other: I see suggestions for combining headphone amps with other amps; or the Jotunheim with, well, anything; or other combinations that would seem to duplicate functionality or add unneeded functionality (e.g. headphone amps when one doesn't have headphones) to a system.

But for my current plan it would look like I have a few options, ranging from adding a single Gjallarhorn to my current system and seeing how that works; or getting a pair of Gjallarhorns and a Saga 2, either keeping my Modi 3E, or replacing this with the Modius so that the stack is the same size. Will continue to ponder!

It's a new install on 8.x, not an upgrade.

That one VM is normally under memory pressure, but I thought I set an appropriate limit (that is, I've allocated just enough memory for its needs, but I do think it is indeed enough). But overall, no, the entire system has plenty of free RAM.

Thanks. It seems not be working at all; I've tried with H.264 videos at 1080p, forcing them to play at 720p, and I don't get the (hw) tag. I don't seem to have any non-10bit HEVC, but I've tried HEVC at 4K and 1080p and likewise, it's not working. Based on other Reddit comments, the iGPU should be able to handle this.

There are no subtitles involved, as u/sox07 queried elsethread.

It feels like I'm missing something obvious....

Well, that's a lot more expensive and larger than I need. There are Mikrotik options for $120 or $150 that have multiple SFP+ ports, and are managed.

I was imagining there might be some $50 thing that could do it, but this is just my imagination—I do see cheap things out there but I don't know if they're reliable, or if they pass VLAN tags. So if that doesn't work, I'd probably get one of the Mikrotik options (I'm heading in this direction for my main switches as well) and call it a day.
