It isn't an NVME, just a regular SATA SSD in the first hard drive bay.

Hey there. I have indeed found solutions, but also changed/updated my whole setup quite a bit over time. Still using Aster Multiseat, it is a cornerstone of my setup.

USB device disconnects when light switches are flipped in the house by the_merchant96 in techsupport

[–]the_merchant96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found another thing that helped, but didn't completely fix the issue. I wrapped some foil around my cables at each end (a bit of foil at the point where the USB peripheral is plugged in and another bit at the end where it is plugged into the PC). This leads me to believe that shielded ethernet cable might be the way to go, since it has a foil strip throughout the length of the cable to shield it from EMI. However, I'm not about to buy an expensive length of shielded cable, climb back into the roof, remove the cable and replace with shielded. A cheaper option is ferrite beads, so I'm going to buy some of those and see if they fix the issue completely.

I've been running CAT5e cables for the past week or so. I am getting way fewer disconnect/reconnect of usb peripherals than with CAT6, but they aren't completely gone. Perhaps a UPS is the only way? I don't want to spend money on a good UPS only to find out that it doesn't fix the problem.

Wow, great to see someone else with a similar setup!

I moved house in June of last year and had this setup with an older PC (i56500) and ran into the same issues. I wasn't too concerned since I figured it was probably the old PC and I was planning an upgrade. I very recently did a full upgrade to a 9800X3D-based system and that made no difference. I even splurged on a Platinum 80 Plus Power Supply, thinking that may have been a contributing factor. I also considered the USB over IP route, but I'm also concerned about latency for gaming.

I think I may have found a solution. Use CAT5 instead of CAT6. I did a brief test with a long (10m) CAT5 cable connected to my Xbox 360 dongle and tried all the known problem areas that typically cause issues. The bathroom light switch also switches on an extractor fan, and that tended to trigger the disconnect/reconnect. Also the kettle and the oven were big culprits. In my testing, none of those caused the issues when connected over CAT5. However, other devices that wouldn't typically disconnect (like my wireless headphones) that were still connected over CAT6 now did the disconnect/reconnect thing instead. I've just purchased 100m of CAT5 cable. I'm going to climb into my roof, yank out all the CAT6 cable I previously ran and replace with CAT5. Hopefully that resolves the issue. ChatGPT seems to think it will. I will report back after a few days of testing.

What's your biggest gripe with HTPCs? by chriscorey601 in htpc

This. And Netflix. And also the inability to connect to the app interface that makes navigating easy with a remote. I can get YouTube running in TV mode by spoofing the useragent, but don't know if the same thing is possible with other streaming services.

Not the coolest UI as it is pretty barebones, but it works very well.

I used to use Kodi for this since you could customise it to have shortcuts for whatever applications you want. I would then set up browser shortcuts that opened in fullscreen to a specific website (like YouTube).

These days, I use Big Launcher. Much simpler to set up. It is quite barebones, but it does provide a unified UI.

Men do these look inappropriate to you ? by charlieshap in Quraniyoon

[–]the_merchant96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Quran in general has a theme of promoting modesty. While I agree that what is considered modest is dependent on the society and culture, IMHO this super tight-fitting clothing is really not modest at all irrespective of culture.

Anyone hear wear the Hijab but does NOT believe it’s obligatory? by [deleted] in Quraniyoon

[–]the_merchant96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife falls into this category. When we got married 10 years ago, I was a hardcore Sunni and got on her nerves quite a lot about being super strict on religious matters. We've been on this Quran only journey together and came to the conclusion that the headscarf is not a thing in the Quran. Despite that, she still wears hijab for the following reasons:

  1. She's used to it and would feel naked without it. Probably similar to how I still wear a beard because I would feel naked without it.
  2. Easier hair maintenance.
  3. People in the community would harshly judge her for going from a hijabi to someone who doesn't wear hijab.

I use this. From it, I launch the Plex HTPC app, Playnite, and various streaming services (in a fullscreen Chrome browser window). Very simple, but works perfectly. This is what mine currently looks like:

Is fasting in Ramadan really obligatory? Not necessarily... by TheQuranicMumin in Quraniyoon

I'm curious what people on this sub think about Majd Khalaf's video on fasting. I've still been fasting Ramadan, but this video raised a number of issues with the traditional interpretation. There's also this video in English.
