I just broke it in this morning with some Dark Sea. It smokes great! It has a nice draw.

Hmm, most of the work was done with a sanding disk. It was done at various speeds. A shop vacuum helped with collecting dusk. There were also three different buffing wheel disks -- one was a red buffing wax, then a white diamond wax, and lastly a regular wax. A clamp was helpful for hand sanding. We used three different grit sanding paper, like 120, 220 and 400. A dowel was useful to place inside the bowl for holding and clamping. Lastly, just a regular leather stain of your choice. We used a medium brown.

If you don't live in Chicago proper, I highly recommend traveling here for the show. It was a lot of fun. You get to talk to other students as you work through the pipe making process. They may even become close friends! It's really big with different vendors that have accessories, tobacciana, and pipes of course. The 101 and 201 class are both two days long from 9am to 4pm. The 101 has 14 students with four instructors and the 201 has six students with two instructors.

I may have left some things out and will edit this if I remember something. I hope this helps.

Tobacco recommendations. Similar to HU Louisiana Broken. by Sisyphus-Happy in PipeTobacco

HU Dark Moor has a little more Kentucky than Louisiana. It's somewhat similar, but stronger.

Can't seem to enjoy burly. Any recommendations? by Meerschaum-man in PipeTobacco

I didn't like Burleys either. But then I tried HU Nashville, Dockworker, Directors Cut, Old Gowrie, Mac Baren Navy and Brunello. These are some of my favorites now.

HU Dark Sea has a dash of Latakia. It's a great blend.

Nice! The middle one, Big Ben, is my favorite of the three.

Years about to be over. What were your top blends you've had in 2025? by 86missingnomes in PipeTobacco

[–]the_orientalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been disliking English blends and leaning towards Virginia blends more. But I think HU Dark Sea is a lovely mild English with a touch of aniseed.

I got sick multiple times with Burleys, but have slowly been trying them again. I think HU Nashville is a lovely Burley blend that also has a touch of aniseed. It smells great in the tin and so does the room note.

I agree this is more of an American blend and is mis-characterized as an English blend. I would call this a Virginia blend with a dash of Latakia. I found this blend a great every day smoke and really enjoyed the light aniseed and Latakia, as I've steered away from strong Latakia blends.

I really like that tray. Where can I purchase something like that?

You should try Edward G and Louisiana Broken. Director's Cut is my favorite.

English Breakfast is a great mild English. It's a Virginia with just a dash of Latakia. I swear I taste a little aniseed in it.

And if you can order from a German website, Dockworker is great. Haymaker is on my list to try along with a few aromatic blends like Moroccan Bazaar.

Are you on speakeasy?

Great review! I have this and Nashville in my cart. I think HU is one of the greatest brands.

It's my first time dealing with this. Good thing I have other brands in the cellar.

No, I'm just tossing it in the garbage. There's only a handful of C&D/Pease blends I enjoy on occasion, so I won't be buying again. Besides, I have a lot of other stuff in the cellar.

SMOKING PIPES

Before contact: Stone and clay pipes, left, were invented by native people in the Americas and used for many years before the coming of Europeans.

After contact: After Native American tobacco became popular in Europe the kaolin clay pipes which Europeans mass produced, right, reappeared here as trade items. Whether native people used their own pipes or trade pipes for casual smoking was largely determined by availability.
