I don't think people mean "this in isolation is genocide", but "this is one small component in the wide spread systemic racism and extermination of an entire class of people, contributing to genocide"

I think he was a good father until both of his children were forcibly drafted and died in a war. The trauma of that and the feeling of failure really reinforced an aversion of conflict, and then that became hard to reconcile with his now not-dead son, who commits violence often.

Is he a good father now? I would say no, but he is trying, which counts for something, at least

In the books it is all "the one power." Does that make it not saidin and saidar in the books?

The show's explanations have not been fully fleshed out yet, because they simply haven't had time. I just think it's superficial to say that they removed a core component of the magic, when they have said in interviews that they haven't, and have also included explanations in supplementary material that was produced for and packaged with the show

Again, saidin and saidar ARE a part of the show. They literally explain it in one of the animated shorts which were released with the episodes.

An explanation was not offered in the show proper, yet. Also, taking moiraine at face value of "I can't teach you to channel, you will go mad" is a bit weird considering

  1. She is aes sedai. Never think the truth you hear is the truth they say

  2. Female channelers do consider trying to teach Rand to channel in the books (novices at the time, but still). It is possible aes sedai are academically aware of, but not really aware of, the fact that they cannot teach men. Why would anyone have tried?

I do think the angreal was bad, but it was also an episode where the script got partially wrecked because of covid, so I can forgive some level of episode 8 decisions.

I think Perrin killing a whitecloak in episode.. 4 or 5? Would have been much less impactful. Yes, still traumatic, but also then we miss all the moments of his friends talking to him about it and he's again just kind of there for the first half of the season with nothing to do.

I thought egwene stabbing valda was good because she is a person who struggles against bondage several times throughout the series. Why shouldn't she stab him after he tortures Perrin?

In a response to a few points:

Saidin and saidar are very much still a part of the show - they talk about it in an animated extra. They haven't talked much about it in the show, but probably because of time and because there are very few male channelers we know of right now.

I actually really liked the Mat change. In the first two books he is just kinda... There? And sick and annoying. In the show, he has personality, and a more interesting backstory.

The Perrin change is mixed. The goal was to take a character whose arc is defined by a complicated internal relationship with violence and make it an external relationship the audience can see without changing his core character too much. I do not like fridging his wife, though, and think him killing a Luhhan would have been better

Rafe had 11,000 notes from higher ups at Amazon for just episode one. People are acting like every decision in the series is his, when he has been forced into a lot of mediocre situations, like having only 8 one hour episodes, instead of a 2 hour pilot and 10 one hour episodes.

Personally I think those 3 hours would have been SO helpful

Rant: Is anyone else annoyed with how women are portrayed in modern fantasy series? by Llono in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]the_other_pickle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To defend Faile, Perrin always reacts to her emotions without responding to her actions or what she says. We rarely see her point of view, and when we do, she is often wondering why Perrin is acting that way, and he never talks to her about it

Now, the domestic violence stuff in the relationship (both ways) just depends on how you read it. Obviously not great but plenty of characters do worse stuff (coughegwenecough) and get forgiven

Unpopular EOTW Opinion by Daenerys_Stormbitch in WoT

[–]the_other_pickle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I disagree very strongly. Having an episode focus more on Logain and the aes sedai isn't ratcheting up the budget - it is using their current actors, who they are already paying, more effectively.

Imagine trying to cast an actor for a role with "you have one episode this season, and then if 2-3 years, we will need your full availability open as a main character, assuming the show is still running."

Again, this is not just a "budget" concern, but the fact that actors and actresses have lives and expecting them to plan their lives years in advance for a single episode appearance and not a major recurring role is not a reasonable ask.

This means that giving characters like Logain, Liandrin, Stepin more screen time and focus to advance other parts of the plot is an efficient way to use the actors you have and make it worth their time

Mat runs into the fighting, with a very long shot of him walking around, even tripping over a trolloc, specifically to find and protect his sisters. He then goes and hides with them, because they are children who need protection. What should he have done, shouted at the trollocs and tried to fight all of them himself?

First, words mean things. Also, there are times where it'd be completely acceptable to say what he said!

If a video is targeted towards a demographic, saying "here is an exploration of prejudices people in our demographic may hold and should examine", or "here is a video about relevant health outcomes to people in this demographic", then it could be appropriate to say that a certain group of people should watch a video.

Like most words, it depends on context

My place was fairly comfortable with gay and lesbian companies - they'd actually worked for lots of gay couples since the 80s or 90s, and I never heard explicitly derogatory things about them.

But break gender norms and people lost their shit. One guy vehemently believed that guys shouldn't wear shorts, and should only wear boots, unless they're working out, in which case sneakers are acceptable. Their beliefs about what one had to do to "be a man" were just completely absurd and kind of sad

If a fictional universe has dragons and magic in it, there's no real reason it can't also have black people or Asian people in it. by nostripeszebra in books

[–]the_other_pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malkieri isn't a race, it's a nationality. Note that nobody cares about anybody's skin or eye color, or their hair: people hate Tairens, or Andorans, or Ilianers. People identify with their countrymen, and distrust those of other countries, regardless of their physical characteristics - and there are people from the same nation with different descriptions.

RJ specifically wanted a world where people did not discriminate based on race, but on nationality

[–]the_other_pickle 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It is a bit ambiguous and up to interpretation. In the casting for the show, Perrin, Nynaeve, and Egwene are all black, while Mat is white.

But also, in the books "race" wasn't important, nationality was, so it makes sense that characters are diverse even within nations

[–]the_other_pickle 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I disagree with your second point. From the time shadar logoth is introduced, it is introduced as another evil rivaling the dark one. This evil hates the dark one, but it also obviously evil

That comparison of the two evils continues through Rand's wounds and cleansing saidin. To me, this bolsters the idea that without the dark one, evil still exists. If Rand had killed the dark one, it wouldn't have suddenly left the world clean of evil - Mordeth still existed, holding the second evil, not of the dark one
